Software engineering is a mature and established discipline that offers excellent professional career opportunities. The Edinburgh Napier MEng in Software Engineering builds on the success of our existing BEng (Hons) Software Engineering degree, offering an advanced award in recognition of a more comprehensive and challenging course of study.

This award recognises professionalism in the development of excellent quality software, using industry recognised tools and techniques in a range of application areas. Your study will be supported by input and guidance from industry-experienced teaching staff.

The first priority of this course is to give you a sound understanding of the principles of modern software engineering. With a good grasp of the basics, you'll go on to learn the theory and techniques behind successful applications of this knowledge. By the time you graduate, you'll have the ability to test, evaluate and analyse existing systems, as well as designing and developing your own. You'll also be able to manage and analyse information, and gain an understanding of the principles behind successful interactivity.

All these skills will be reinforced in practical settings, giving you the combination of skills and experience that employers are actively seeking.

Stages 1, 2 and 3

Upon entry into stage 1, you will share a common first year with a range of other BEng programmes. As MEng students, you will study an additional Mathematics for Software Engineering module. During the second year you will also study an additional Algorithms and Data Structures module. These modules provide the stronger theoretical underpinning required for an MEng programme.

After stage 2, you will be offered the opportunity to undertake a 12-month Work-Based Learning (WBL) placement. The School has long experience of running programmes incorporating placement and, in common with the rest of the group of programmes suite, an additional trimester is offered if you do not wish undertake a work placement.

Levels 4 and 5

During level 4, you will undertake an individual project alongside BEng students. This allows you to demonstrate their technical skills through the development of a substantial piece of software.

During level 5 your technical development will continue through the study of formal methods for software engineering, emergent computation and enterprise systems. To develop the team working and interpersonal skills required by Industry, you will undertake a group project and the complete a study of digital markets. As a result you will graduate with the skills and experience needed to take leading position in the software engineering industry of the future.
