The aim of this programme is to take students with a prior knowledge of economics or the natural sciences and give them a thorough grounding in theoretical and applied finance. The course provides the essential postgraduate skills to those wishing to follow careers in applied or quantitative finance, as well as those wishing to pursue further research.

Compulsory core components:

* Theory of Finance (Double Unit)
* Either Econometrics (Double Unit) or
Econometric Methods for Research (Double Unit)
* Either Continuous-time Finance or
Financial Market Micro-structure
* Corporate Finance
* Financial Markets

In addition, students choose three optional units which should be selected from the following, with at least two units from group A:

* Financial Engineering
* Financial Risk Management
* Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation
* Macro and Financial Econometrics
* Portfolio Selection and Management

Group B
* Applied Microeconometrics
* Experimental Economics
* Game Theory
* Industrial Economics

* Political Economy from the General Equilibrium Point of View
* Public Finance
* Public Sector Economics: Microeconomic Applications
* Time Series

Minimum entry criterion is an upper-second class honours level first degree or equivalent in appropriate subjects. Entry is not restricted to those with an economics first degree. For example, a degree in mathematics, computing, engineering or the sciences could be a sufficient qualification.English Language RequirementsThe department's normal English language requirements, are (a) an IELTS result of 6.5 or (b) a TOEFL result of 600 if paper-based, 250 if CBT and 100 if iBT, or (c) A, B, and C Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.For those applicants who have already achieved an IELTS 6.0 and only need a 0.5 increase to make their offers unconditional, the University has approved a limited system of admission through satisfactory completion of the English for Academic and Research Purposes course (EARP1). The course is offered by the Centre for English Language Teaching and after successful completion of it and upon passing the end-of-course test, students will enter the Department directly and they do not need to re-take IELTS at the end of August.
