Leiden University's Master's specialisation Egyptology covers the linguistic and cultural history of Egypt from the Pharaonic times to Graeco-Roman and Coptic Egypt.
Do you have a background in ancient history, Near Eastern studies or archaeology and are you interested in gaining more in-depth knowledge of ancient Egypt? Or do you have a BA in Egyptology and do you want to pursue your interests and specialise further? Then Leiden's MA degree in Egyptology is the ideal programme for you. The programme offers a wide range of approaches and topics to meet your interests. Part of the curriculum takes place in Egypt. The department of Egyptology is housed in one of the world's most reputable Egyptological libraries, the library of the Netherlands Institute for the Near East (NINO), giving you ready access to the library's extensive materials for your study and research. Part of your programme will take place in Egypt, where you will gain essential knowledge and experience in field and research projects.
Semester 1
The programme starts with a specialised course on Egyptian temple inscriptions of the Greco-Roman period. You will also be required to choose one of the following subjects:
* Demotic Papyrology
* Greek Papyrology
* Coptic Papyrology
Later in the first semester you will travel to Cairo for an eight-week period to take part in a specially designed course on carrying out research in Egypt. You will be introduced to fieldwork and other research projects during classes taught at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC) and on excursions throughout the country.
Semester 2
During the second semester you will follow a course on Egyptian Archaeology and Epigraphy: Problems and Priorities, which will require you to critically assess some recent literature in the specialization of your choice. The rest of the period is spent researching and writing your Master´s thesis. One staff member will act as your tutor and will be available throughout this period to offer guidance and advice.
Specialisations
The MA in Egyptian Language and Culture is a wide-ranging programme, which offers a variety of study options within Egyptology, such as Religious texts, Demotic, or Coptology. One particular focus is on field research in Egypt. As a result, you have a wide choice when it comes to choosing the topic of your MA thesis. You will be advised by a member of the academic staff, who will also guide you in carrying out the research.
Research/PhD
Anyone with a Master´s degree can, in principle, apply for a PhD track. The procedure for admission to the PhD track is conducted by means of job applications. However, students with a particular interest in an academic career are advised to choose for an MPhil programme, since these programmes explicitly prepare students for research at the PhD level.
The research programme of the Egyptology Department includes projects in Egyptian art history, religion, linguistics, and social and economic history. Greco-Roman and Coptic Egypt are studied in close co-operation with the Papyrological Institute and other affiliated institutions. Excavations are carried out in Saqqara (see: Saqqara Online), but staff members are engaged in fieldwork projects throughout Egypt. Most research is undertaken in collaboration with foreign universities and research institutes, inter alia in Germany, Egypt, France, Italy, Poland and the United States.
This programme has a workload of 60 ECTS.
