This program provides advanced professionally oriented studies for practising educators, focusing on the professional development needs and in-service requirements of teachers and administrators. Some pathways offer specific qualifications (eg Guidance and Counselling, Learning Support, Leadership, Middle Years of Schooling, Mathematics and Science Education), while others offer significant professional advantage to educators interested in career advancement or broadening career options.

Careers
Educational Studies prepares students for a variety of employment opportunities including learning support teachers, guidance counsellors secondary mathematics teachers, middle years teachers, science teachers and educational administrators. The program also allows students to gain significant professional advantages in advancing their career and broadening their career options.

Placement courses
Students studying Guidance and Counselling will be required to complete practicum courses that involve approximately 200 contact hours.

Students studying Learning Support will be required to complete practicum courses that involve approximately 20 contact hours.

Students may incur costs associated with the practicum (e.g. travel, parking, stationery). Practicum placements may be located throughout Australia or overseas. Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing practicum in Queensland. Students can apply for a Blue Card through the School of Education and should do so three months before their practicum is due to commence.

To complete the Master of Educational Studies
To complete the Master of Educational Studies, a student must complete a requisite number of courses chosen from the course list and according to the Rules for the program.

Students should be aware of the University of Queensland rules, particularly the General Award Rules, which govern the conduct of UQ programs. Students will find a link to the General Award Rules, and other University rules, on the University Rules page.

#16 program: A student is required to obtain #16 as per -

* #16 PG courses; or
* #12 PG courses + #4 Project; or
* #10 PG courses + #6 Project; or
* #8 PG courses + #8 extended Project as approved by the Head of School.

#24 program:A student is required to obtain #24 as per -

* #24 PG courses; or
* #20 PG courses + #4 Project; or
* #18 PG courses + #6 Project; or
* #16 PG courses + #8 Extended Project as approved by the Head of School

Early exit points
Based upon course selection, students may be able to exit this award with the:

* Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (#8)
* Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (#16)

A three-year bachelor degree in education or a relevant area. Applicants with a four-year bachelor degree or equivalent may apply for the #16 unit MEdSt program (two semesters full-time or part-time equivalent).English ProficiencyIELTS overall 6.5; writing 6, reading 6, speaking 6, and listening 6 (or comparable English language proficiency as per University policy) English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5
