The worlds oceans have waste resources which will become more and more important, and which we will depend upon in the future. In order to use and protect these resources and to develop coastal resources in a sustainable way, there is a need for in-depth and interdisciplinary knowledge about the interactions between economy, environment, technology, marine biological resources, and public concerns.

The Master of Science programme in Marine Coastal Development is a two-year international multidisciplinary MSc-programme. It is especially designed to give the students a broad understanding of the complex interactions in the marine sector. NTNU has excellent research communities within these fields and a close contact with relevant external partners.

Specializations

The programme offers three specializations which include an individual research project with publication of a Master Degree thesis according to international standards. The specializations are as follows:

* Aquaculture
* Fisheries and marine resources
* Marine biology and biochemistry

Strategic Focus Area: Marine and Maritime Research

Marine and maritime research is a strategic research focus area at NTNU. The focus area has been established in an effort to strengthen the cross-disciplinary marine research between the different faculties and departments involved in marine research and higher education at the university.

Career Prospects A Masters degree in Marine Coastal Development will give you a solid basis for further careers, both nationally and internationally. The multidisciplinary background this programme offers is in demand by both the fisheries- and aquaculture industry, as well as administrative authorities involved in management of the coastal zone.

The programme offers these specializations:Aquaculture

Students will get knowledge of both national and international aquaculture, with a focus on biological and engineering aspects of marine hatcheries, cage farming systems and aquaculture recycling systems. The study will give an introduction to the biological foundation of aquaculture and the technological premises for a sustainable, rational and safe production. Some important issues are marine juvenile technology, design and management of sea farms, sea based aquaculture, recycling technology, aquaculture cybernetics, environmental analysis, environmental impacts, and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture. A main emphasis will be to give students a holistic understanding of the development of the industrial marine aquaculture for tomorrows challenges and demands of the market.

The study specialization Aquaculture offers the following academic profiles:

* Marine Aquaculture Systems
* Marine Juvenile Technology
* Environmental Engineering and Analysis

Fisheries and marine resources

The students will get knowledge in processing technologies of marine resources, design of fishing vessels and fishing gear, and analysis of catching capacities of fishing fleets in light of the current technologies. This includes knowledge about the framework conditions and environmental challenges for commercial fisheries in a value chain perspective.

The study specialization Fisheries and Marine Resources offers the following academic profiles:

* Processing of Marine Resources
* Sustainable Marine Harvesting

Marine biology and biochemistry

This study will give the students a broad understanding of the common methodology in marine ecology and biochemistry, plankton and nekton ecology and biodiversity, the interactions of physical forcing and organisms in the worlds oceans, and marine biochemistry and biotechnology. There will be a main focus on the local marine environment and resources, but the effects of the worlds oceans on food production and global climate will also be important areas. The students will learn about and use the latest methods within marine ecology, biodiversity, bio-prospecting, fisheries biology, biochemistry, biological oceanography and monitoring technologies.

The study specialization Marine Biology and Biochemistry offers the following academic profiles:

* Marine Biology and Ecology
* Marine Biochemistry and Biotechnology

BSc/BEng degree or equivalent in areas related to marine such as: * Marine Technology * Marin Biology * Marine Biochemestry * AquacultureMarine Technology background: Students studying Marin technology qualify to enter the MSc in Marine Coastal Development.Biology background: In order to qualify to enter the MSc in Marine Coastal Development, students studing biology at the NTNU have to take the following courses English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL paper-based test score : 600 TOEFL iBT® test: 90

NTNU charges no tuition fees, but regulations from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration state that

all international students who are not citizens of EU/EEA/EFTA countries must document that they have enough money to live in Norway. For the 2017 intake this amount is NOK 103 950. Successful applicants who are given an offer of admission will later be asked to transfer this amount to NTNU's deposit account.

NTNU offers no scholarships.
