The ANU Master of Laws Degree is a unique and highly valuable qualification. It enables law and non-law graduates to undertake Masters Level courses focusing on a wide range of legal areas. Students enrolled in the Master of Laws can complete any LAWS 8000-level courses (subject to completing any prerequisite courses).

Students can also choose to enrol in a specialist Master of Laws in Law, Governance and Development; Master of Laws in Environmental Law; Master of Laws in International Security Law; Master of Laws in International Law and; Master of Laws in Migration Law.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, graduates will have the skills and knowledge to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the areas of law studied
  2. Analyse case law, legislation and scholarly writings on the specialist areas of law studied
  3. Synthesise legal materials into a concise and cohesive argument that addresses a legal question
  4. Incorporate social, comparative or interdisciplinary approaches into legal analysis
  5. Undertake in-depth legal research using a variety of materials and sources
  6. Engage in original and critical reflection on the law
  7. Contribute to debates on theoretical, policy and practical issues in the areas of law studied

The Master of Laws requires completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

48 units from completion of 8000-level courses in the subject area LAWS Law

Completion of a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree with a minimum average of at least 50%; or completion of a non-law degree and the Graduate Certificate of Law with a minimum average of at least 50%

ANU offers a wide range of scholarships to students to assist with the cost of their studies.
