We have the reach, expertise, professional relationships and sources of capital to realise our mission of having a positive impact on a changing world.

We are among the 1% of business schools in the world to have achieved the elite 'triple crown' of accreditation by the three major global business school accreditation bodies – AACSB, EQUIS andAMBA – and the only Group of Eight Australian university to have done so.

  • Education

Welcome to the Faculty of Education. I encourage you to visit us and experience the outstanding opportunities we offer for study, research, and professional services.

At the Faculty, we offer a diverse and innovative curriculum that responds to the needs of the education community. Our graduates have the power to make a difference, and to influence across nations and generations through their work in teaching, research and policy formulation and advice.

The Faculty has a strong international reputation and is exceptionally well regarded for its research, work with communities and collaboration in both the public and private sector.

Together, we are working to enhance the quality of education in Australia and around the world.

  • Engineering

Our Faculty of Engineering is one of the largest in Australia, renowned worldwide for the quality of our teaching and research, and the calibre of our graduates.

Our equipment and facilities are outstanding, and include:

    • microscopy and microanalysis equipment worth $8 million and
    • an 80-metre wave tank.

We teach our students to design creatively, to take an innovative approach to both the development and the application of engineering technology. Our academic staff – many of whom are acknowledged leaders in their fields – provide a stimulating learning environment that extends well beyond the lecture hall.

  • Information Technology

We are the only Go8 university with a dedicated IT faculty.
Monash is ranked as one of the top 100 universities in the world for Computer Science and Information Systems by the 2015 QS World University Rankings. This means our graduates hit the global marketplace with a globally recognised degree.

  • Law

The Monash Law Faculty is one of the largest and most prestigious law schools in Australia. Consistently ranked among the world's top 30 in the QS World University rankings,  we have a broad teaching base, strong international links and an excellent reputation. We offer a range of Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research degrees and provide legal education and training to over 3500 undergraduate and postgraduate students at any one time.

  • Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences

The Faculty is also home to a number of leading medical and biomedical research institutes and groups, and has contributed to advances in many crucial areas: in vitro fertilisation, obesity research, drug design, cardiovascular physiology, functional genomics, infectious diseases, inflammation, psychology, neurosciences and mental health.

Notwithstanding the relatively short history of our University, the Faculty is ranked in the top 50 in the world for its expertise in life sciences and biomedicine by the Times Higher Education and QS World University 2012 benchmarks.

  • Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

As Australia's leading faculty of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, we are at the forefront of both research and education in our field.

Our research undertaken by Australia's leading pharmaceutical scientists (2015 ERA rankings 5/5), is having an impact on health around the globe.

Our successes include the joint design and development of the influenza treatment Relenza, the collaborative design of a potential single-dose malaria treatment and new approaches to delivering drugs to the body more effectively.

This ensures you will graduate with a degree unique to you, tailored to your individual interests and career aspirations. Your experience will be enriched by a choice of extra-curricular programs designed exclusively for you.

Named after engineer, military leader and public administrator Sir John Monash, Monash University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1958. When our first students began their studies at our foundation campus in Clayton in 1961, we became the first university established in the state of Victoria in over 100 years.

Early years

The early vision was to create a research-focused tertiary institution with an emphasis on science and technology.

As Monash has always done, though, we quickly moved beyond the bounds of expectation. Free from tradition and convention, we were within just a few years of our first intake of a mere 347 students, offering courses in arts, economics, education, engineering, law, medicine, politics and science.

Creativity, innovation and activism

The focus on research excellence remained, but what grew around it was a culture of creativity, innovation and irreverence.

Growth

The growth from technology/science specialists to general university was rapid. It was accelerated by a merger with Chisholm Institute in 1990, which saw the Caulfield and Peninsula campuses become a part of the University.

International expansion

Monash South Africa

In 1998, the Malaysian Ministry of Education invited Monash to set up a campus in Malaysia in collaboration with the Sunway Group. Monash University Malaysia was established in the same year, the first Monash campus outside Australia and the first "foreign" university in Malaysia.

A second off-shore campus was opened in South Africa in 2001. Since 2014, Monash South Africa has not operated as a full campus of Monash University but remains a location where Monash University degrees are delivered, along with qualifications unique to this location.

Group of Eight

To underscore the reputation that the University had earned, in 1999 we were invited to be a founding member of the Group of Eight, the coalition of Australia's most prestigious research-intensive universities.

Monash had been around for just four decades, and yet was demonstrably holding its own against universities that had had well over a century to establish themselves.

Today

From a single campus at Clayton with fewer than 400 students, Monash has grown into a network of campuses, education centres and partnerships spanning the globe. With approximately 60,000 students (and 250,000 almuni) from over 170 countries, we are today Australia's largest university.

Our rankings

At Monash, we take our reputation seriously. Monash has achieved an enviable national and international reputation for research and teaching excellence in a short 50 years. Monash is ranked in the top one per cent of world universities. And, in line with our vision and strategy for the future, Monash will continue to drive for improvement.

But while rankings are important, we care as much about your individual experience as we do about our position on the global scale. Monash gives you opportunities that don't affect our rankings, but will enrich your life as a Monash student.

Monash is ranked:

  • in the top one per cent of world universities – 73rd in the world – according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2015–2016)
  • in the top 150 world universities, with an estimated rank of 114th according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2015.

Leaders from the world's most successful companies consistently rate Monash as a preferred university from which to hire graduates. Global Employability Rankings, 2011–2015, New York Times

Ranked 56th in the world from which to hire graduates (Global Employability University Rankings, 2015)

The Good Universities Guide 2016 awarded Monash five stars for:

  • staff qualifications
  • student retention
  • research grants.

Top one per cent of business employability education providers. Monash is the only Group of Eight university with triple crown international business accreditation within the Faculty of Business and Economics:

  • AACSB
  • EQUIS
  • AMBA.

Discipline rankings

Monash is ranked:

  • the best university in Australia for engineering and technology (Times Higher Education, 2015–2016)
  • the best university in Australia for chemistry (Academic Ranking of World Universities, 2015)
  • 35th in the world for clinical, preclinical medicine and health (Times Higher Education, 2015–2016)
  • 44th in the world for arts and humanities (Times Higher Education, 2014–2015)

Monash is a member of the Group of EightThis is an external link, an alliance of leading Australian universities recognised for their excellence in teaching and research. Group of Eight universities produce graduates who find full-time employment sooner, begin on higher salaries, and are more likely to move onto postgraduate studies than graduates from other Australian universities.

Student life is about more than just study. Brilliant careers also come from exploring new perspectives, challenging our preconceptions and making a difference in the community.

As a Monash student you have the chance to join a huge range of clubs, make new friends and share experiences that you'll treasure for the rest of your life. We also have many services to help you settle in and get involved.

Clubs and societies

Studying at uni offers a unique opportunity to try out new things and explore what most interests you. The best way to share these experiences is by joining a club and participating in your local student association.

All Monash campuses have student-run clubs that organise fun activities such as trips and social events. There are clubs for everybody, from anime and chess fanatics to lovers of performing arts and the outdoors, medieval enthusiasts and volunteer groups.

Whether you want to meet people who share the same hobbies, who like the same music, or if you just want somebody to hang out with, clubs and societies are vital parts of uni life. And if you can't find a club that you like, we can help you start a new one.

Monash student associations

Just as the name suggests, student associations represent students. The associations are made up of representatives elected by students and whose role is to liaise with the university to provide services, facilities and amenities around campus.

Student associations give you the chance to influence campus life.

There are heaps of ways you can get involved in your student association, such as writing for the student newspaper, joining a special interest club, and organising events like orientation week.

Participating is not only the key to a great uni experience, it will also help you develop many important life skills such as leadership and working with a team.

Sport

To make the most of your time at uni, a healthy and physically active lifestyle is essential. It's also a guaranteed way to make new friends while you study.

You don't have to be a sports nut or gym junkie to benefit. Monash campuses have plenty of free-play areas where you can have a kick of the ball, shoot hoops with friends, or just work out on the outdoor equipment in your spare time.

Monash University also provides high-quality services and programs at discounted rates to enrich your on-campus experience. We can teach you to swim, give you expert health and fitness advice, or show you how to perform a squat lift. At the gym, you'll find classes in aerobics, martial arts, yoga, aquatics and cycling. Or, join a sports team and get involved in our social competitions. You could be one of more than 600 Monash students who compete at the Australian University Games every year.

No matter what your level of fitness or commitment, physical recreation is a great avenue into the Monash community.

We offer a range of student services to make sure you get the most out of your time at Monash, and we encourage you to take advantage of them.

Child care

Monash has arrangements with childcare centres at the Clayton, Caulfield and Peninsula campuses. Waiting lists may apply due to high demand. Parenting rooms suitable for changing, feeding and resting are also available at most campuses.

Career Connect

Got a question about your career? Make an appointment with one of our friendly career education consultants. You can also log in to Career Gateway and view available jobs.

Financial assistance

Many people need budgeting support while studying. If you're having financial challenges, or just want to manage your money better, you can talk to a student adviser on your campus. An adviser will provide you with advice, support and options.

Health services

Medical clinics are located at the Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula campuses. A team of qualified professional health-care providers staff the University Health Service and are available to provide a wide range of health care including travel advice and vaccinations, mental health, referrals, minor surgery, skin checks and pathology.

Dental and counselling services are also available for most students.

Social Justice Unit

Monash is passionate about fairness and social equity, and seeks to improve the human condition by advancing knowledge and fostering creativity. The Social Justice Unit showcases the University's commitment to diversity by:

  • providing support and resources for students with disability
  • managing the Ally Network that promotes Monash as a safe space for students and staff who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer (LGBTIQ)
  • organising events to promote inclusiveness in the Monash community.

Spirituality

Monash University Chaplaincy provides pastoral and spiritual care to all members of the University community, of all faiths and none. Each campus has at least one resident chaplain who is available to both students and staff.

Study skills

All Monash students have access to online resources to improve study habits. Libraries also host events throughout the year to improve research and learning skills.

Technology services

eSolutions is the central Information Communications and Technology group at Monash University. Whether you want information about the my.monash portal or you're just having trouble printing, the eSolutions service desk is the first point of contact.

Specialised services

We also have services to cater for the specific needs of student groups.

Indigenous students

We offer culturally sensitive assistance to Indigenous students and can even help you with your application. The Yulendj Indigenous Engagement Unit, which provides support services to Indigenous students, is located at the Clayton campus and visits other campuses as needed.

International students

Moving to a new country to study can be daunting, especially if you are living away from family for the first time. At Monash we have a range of services that support you before and after you arrive in Australia. These include pre-departure briefings to help you feel comfortable from the moment you get here. We also offer a free pick-up service to take you from Melbourne Airport to your accommodation.

Rural and regional students

We offer many services to assist students from a rural or regional background. These include special-entry schemes, scholarships and student support.

Students with a disability

Monash promotes access and equity for students who have a disability, ongoing medical or mental health condition.

Study and administration services

Monash also provides help with student forms, ID cards, academic transcripts, student letters and travel concessions.
