The University of Łódź was founded May 24, 1945 in Łódź, Poland, as a continuation of educational institutions functioning in Łódź in the interwar period — the Teacher Training Institute (1921–1928), the Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences (1924–1928) and a division of the Free Polish University (1928–1939).

The University of Łódź (alternative spelling: University of Lodz) is a fully accredited, state-owned, traditional university. It is one of 18 institutions of its type in Poland.

It has more than 47,000 students and 2,600 teachers.

Its international cooperation includes 385 partner institutions from all over the world.

A range of BA, MA, and postgraduate courses held in English as a language of instruction are offered to Polish and overseas students.

  • Faculty of Chemistry

    The Faculty of Chemistry is one of the leading chemistry faculties in Poland. The Faculty offers several types of educational programmes structured in accordance with the Bologna system: 3-year bachelor degree studies (BSc), 2-year master degree studies (MSc) and 4-year doctoral studies (PhD).The faculty members are engaged in teaching and research in almost all fields of modern chemistry. We have many well-equipped laboratories, together with facilities and instrumentation devoted to basic and applied research in the various branches of chemistry. The results of experiments conducted by our scientists are published in reputable journals and often implemented in practice. The Faculty also offers one year postgraduate courses.

    We provide the highest quality of research and teaching: the Ministry of Science and Higher Education granted us the A  (highest!) category.

    We offer 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree studies as well as post-graduate (full-time and extra-mural) trainings, also in English.

    We have educated excellent graduates: e.g. The Prime Minister Marek Belka, Andrzej Sapkowski, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, Krzysztof Candrowicz, Jolanta Chełmińska, Aleksander Gudzowaty, Witold Orłowski, Andrzej Raczko (see more).

    The range of subjects we offer broad - you can choose from Economics, Finances, Spatial Economy, Informatics, Logistics, Sociology, International Relations, etc.

    Modern didactic basis: two assembly halls, 42 audio-visual didactic rooms, 21 classrooms, 20 computer labs, internet café, library, 2 buffets and a canteen.

  • Faculty of Educational Sciences

    The Faculty of Educational Sciences was formed partly from the Department of Humanities and partly from the State School of Pedagogy in Łódź which had been incorporated into the University of Łódź in 1956. In its present form the Faculty was founded in 1991, after separating the Departments of Pedagogy and Psychology from the Faculty of Philosophy and History, and incorporating into the University a section of the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw.

  • Faculty of Geographical Sciences

    Geography has been functioning at the University of Łódź as a distinct organizational unit and field of study since the establishment of this academic institution. The first Department of Geography was set up at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science in 1945. From 1951 it existed for half a century as part of the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences, until the Faculty of Geographical Sciences was established in 2001 as an independent basic organizational unit, one of the 12 faculties comprising the university. Today the Faculty of Geographical Sciences of Łódź University is Poland's leading center for geographical research and education and is authorized to grant doctoral and post-doctoral (habilitation and professorial) degrees in geography. The Faculty employs 129 persons, of whom 103 are academic staff. Twelve departments into which Faculty is divided employ:

    • 12 titular professors (holding positions of full professor),
    • 16 associate professors (with habilitation),
    • 57 doctors (47 in positions of assistant professor, and 10 in positions of senior lecturers),
    • 16 master's degree holders (in position of research-and- teaching assistants).

    The areas of research include both physical geography (climatology, meteorology, geomorphology, paleogeography, hydrology, water management and geology) and socio-economic geography (urban geography, economic geography, social geography, political geography, geography of tourism, regional geography, historical geography, spatial economy and development).

  • Faculty of International and Political Studies

    1.       The Faculty of International and Political Studies offers a wide variety of study opportunities:

    a.       2 undergraduate programs in English on International Encounters in Culture and International Marketing

    b.      3 postgraduate programs in English on International Marketing Management, International Hotel Management and Gender Studies

    c.       1 postgraduate program in French on International Management.

    2.       Students have an opportunity to attend courses on relevant and actual topics e.g. social media, e-commerce, gender etc.

    3.       We use versatile and innovative teaching methods like games, group workshops, on-line video presentations, blogging etc.

    4.       We have many international partnering universities and therefore we offer large amount of possibilities to study abroad with Erasmus/Mobility scholarships.

    5.       Yearly we host numerous mobility students and international teachers from our partner institutions worldwide.

    6.       We teach theory and practice. Many our courses are led by marketing practitioners.

    7.       For our students we organize lots of seminars and lectures, formal and informal meetings with marketing practitioners, journalists , scientists, ambassadors, opinion leaders.

    8.       We help our students to apply for internships in companies and non-profit institutions.

    9.       We are involved in many research projects funded by the European Union, Polish and international institutions

    10.   We celebrate social and cultural occasions with our students e.g. Christmas, Easter, beginning of the academic year etc.

  • Faculty of Law and Administration

    As one of the leading law schools in our country, the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Lodz introduces measures to ensure the high quality of education and strives for its graduates to meet needs and expectations of the present-day labor market. All courses are available for both Polish and incoming foreign students. Polish is the official language of instruction at the University of Lodz. At the Faculty of Law and Administration there are also some courses in foreign languages available.

  • Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science

    It is really important nowadays to study mathematics and computer science. Through studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Lodz, you can get the dream and well-paid profession, among others, such as computer science - a specialist in computer networks and databases, computer graphics, a financial analyst, actuary or logistics. Such specialists are looked for by banks, insurance companies, logistics, IT companies and large manufacturing plants. It is also possible after graduation to work in a school or university.

  • Faculty of Philology

    History of philological studies in Lodz activity dating back to the interwar Polish Free University, the Department of Lodz heavily influenced the scientific and cultural life of the city. Wszechnica group of professors, among which should be mentioned Stefania Skwarczyńska, decisively contributed to the creation in 1945 of the University of Lodz and its cathedrals.

    Cathedral philology at the University of work from the very beginning of its existence, but initially (until 1952) in the Faculty of Humanities. It included a m. In. Cathedral: the history of Polish literature (three), Polish, Slavic philology, literary theory (the first and only time in Poland), library science, and language and literature: French, German, English and Russian.

    Faculty of Physics and Applied Computer Science was established on October 1 2007, as a result of the reorganization of the Department of Physics and Chemistry, but the tradition of carrying the boat with a degree in physics is much longer: goes back to the beginnings of the University of Lodz. Computer studies have been started yet at the Department of Physics and Chemistry, a few years before his division of the Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics and Applied Computer Science.

The School runs 1-month, 5-month and 9-month courses which prepare foreign students for future studying in Poland. It offers basic courses of Polish as well as thematic Polish language courses in history, geography, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and philosophy to provide prospective students with the knowledge needed in their future academic settings. After completion, the students are given right to be admitted without extra examinations to many Polish institutions of higher education.
