About Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg conducts research and education on a broad front within technology, natural sciences, architecture and shipping, and in close contact with external bodies. Our inspiration derives from the pleasure of discovering and the desire to learn. The aim is to make an active contribution to
sustainable community development, both nationally and internationally.

Development and renewal has characterised operations from the very beginning in 1829, completely in accordance with the motto of the founder William Chalmers: Avancez! Today Chalmers has around 10,000 students and 2,650 employees.

Two-thirds of the University’s operations involve research and doctoral programmes. This embodies both innovative, applied research as well as prominent fundamental research. Chalmers is involved in a number of international research collaborations and strategic alliances, including the Alliance for Global Sustainability, UNITECH International, Nordic Five Tech and CESAER.

Good meeting points are a key element in dynamic development. The investments being made on the two Chalmers campuses are aimed at promoting greater interaction between academia, industry and the community. The Johanneberg Campus is located in the centre of Gothenburg and is an important part of the urban landscape. The Lindholmen Campus is in the expanding Norra Älvstranden area, an attractive location characterised by creativity,
dynamism, knowledge and culture.

Strengths and driving forces

The Chalmers areas of advance bring together the three components that make up the knowledge triangle: research, education and innovation. These give Chalmers a clearer profile and new opportunities to focus on and deal with the major challenges facing the world. The aim is for the Chalmers areas of advance, through scientific excellence, to contribute to a sustainable future using the basic sciences as a foundation and with innovation and entrepreneurship as central driving forces.
Interaction with the external world – Chalmers is constantly developing new models for interaction, ensuring that education, research and innovation will be of benefit to the community. Chalmers Innovation comprises new, innovative companies based mainly on research and education at Chalmers. Johanneberg Science Park is developing in order to clarify the link to three of the Chalmers areas of advance: Built Environment, Energy and Materials Science. Lindholmen Science Park brings together high-tech, developmentintensive companies within mobile communication, intelligent transport and the modern media industry. Sahlgrenska Science Park is a business incubator and technology park that gives people with ideas and new companies working in life sciences the best possible start to their new ventures.

History of Chalmers

Chalmers was founded in 1829. The university is named after the major benefactor, William Chalmers, one of the directors of the successful Swedish East India Company in Göteborg.
William Chalmers (1748-1811) had created a greater wealth from his work within the Swedish East India Company during the late 1700's. Influenced by Pehr Dubb he then bequeathed all his estate to the Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg and to the creation of an industry school for poor children who learned to read and write. "Chalmersska Slöjdeskolan", which opened in Gothenburg, November 5, 1829, and became the beginning of Chalmers University of Technology.

The first president was the industrialist Carl Palmstedt. The connections with industry and commerce has therefore been natural from the very beginning.
Chalmers is the only university in Sweden, which is named after a person. The emblem Avancez together with the logo, forms the university brand. The emblem has its origin in the donor William Chalmers seal.

The student union and the university are two separate organisations which work with each other to ensure that the students are benefitted from their time at Chalmers. In one way, the university is responsible for education and the union is responsible for the fun and combined they make the life of a student whole. By focusing on students’ perspectives on the various aspects of life on campus, the union ensures that the students at Chalmers have an influence on everything – be it education, the job market or a secure and fun filled social life.
