About Liverpool John Moores University

Liverpool John Moores University (brevis: LJMU) is a public research university in the city of Liverpool, England.

In 1823 a small institution was founded that was to revolutionise education in Liverpool and provide opportunities for the working people of the city.

The Liverpool Mechanics Institute was founded by people of power and influence who recognised the transformative effects of education and the impact that learning and aspiration could have on individuals, communities and society.  It was the first such institution to be founded in England.
This small, pioneering movement was followed by the establishment of the Liverpool Institute and School of Art and the Liverpool Nautical College, and in 1900 Irene Mabel Marsh opened the IM Marsh campus. These organisations together laid the foundations for Liverpool John Moores University, an institution that has grown and flourished and continues to provide opportunities for all.
It is an ethos we characterise in the simple words – dream, plan, achieve – from a statement made by our namesake Sir John Moores, the founder of the Littlewoods empire and a beacon of equal opportunities in Liverpool, “...if you want to enough, you can achieve anything”.  Today, with a vibrant community of 25,000 students from over 100 countries world-wide, 2,500 staff and 250 degree courses, Liverpool John Moores University is one of the largest, most dynamic and forward-thinking universities in the UK.

As a modern, civic university, we are integral to the life of the city, but we are also global in our approach, forging international partnerships to facilitate world-leading research and collaboration to tackle some of the huge global issues facing the modern world that have an everyday impact here at home.
As an institution we are unashamedly ambitious – for our students, our staff and for the wider global community.  Under the leadership of our Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Nigel Weatherill, we are undergoing a renaissance as the strength of our teaching and research continues to exceed even our own high expectations. We were one of the highest climbers nationally in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, which assesses the quality of research in the UK. We are on an upward trajectory in the major UK league tables. Our student satisfaction scores increase year on year. All of this helps to build on our solid reputation for providing students with the highest quality teaching and a learning experience informed by relevant, credible and world-leading research.
We acknowledge and celebrate our successes and achievements, but we never rest on our laurels. Continuing to improve and enhance the experience and opportunities offered to our students is the driving force for the whole University - our pioneering work in improving graduate prospects, our innovative approach to cultural partnerships and our evolving student-focused campus are setting benchmarks for the essence of university life in the 21st century.

History of LJMU

Origins

Originally founded as a small mechanics institution (Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts) in 1823, the institution grew over the centuries by converging and amalgamating with different colleges, including City of Liverpool C.F. Mott Training College, before eventually becoming Liverpool Polytechnic in 1970. The University also has a long history of providing training, education and research to the maritime industry, dating back to the formation of the Liverpool Nautical College in 1892.

The institution then became a university under the terms of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 under the new title of "Liverpool John Moores University". This new title was approved by the Privy Council on 15 September 1992. The university took its name from Sir John Moores, the founder of the Littlewoods empire. Moores was a great believer in the creation of opportunity for all, which embodies the ethos of LJMU in providing educational routes for people of all ages and from all backgrounds. This belief led Sir John Moores to invest in the institution and facilities, such as the John Foster Building (housing the Liverpool Business School), designed by and named after leading architect John Foster.[4] With the institution's backgrounds dating back as far as 1823, many of the university buildings date back also, with aesthetically pleasing Georgian and Victorianbuildings found on a few of the campuses.

Present day

LJMU now has more than 24,000 students. LJMU was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2005.

Currently, Liverpool John Moores University is receiving more applications than previously seen[citation needed]; according to data in 2009, the total number of applications submitted to LJMU was 27,784.

On 14 April 2008, Dr Brian May CBE was inducted into the university as the fourth Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University. Dr May is also the lead guitarist for the rock band Queen. He replaced outgoing Chancellor Cherie Booth QC, wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Honorary fellows in attendance at the ceremony included Sir Patrick Moore and Pete Postlethwaite. May was succeeded as Chancellor in 2013 by Sir Brian Leveson.

LJMU is a founding member of the Northern Consortium, an educational charity, owned by eleven universities in the north of England. Alongside LJMU, this group was co founded by The University of Bradford, The University of Huddersfield, Leeds Metropolitan University, The University of Leeds, The University of Liverpool, Manchester Metropolitan University, The University of Manchester, The University of Salford, Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Sheffield.
