Description

Global Health Initiative Program (GHIP) is an innovative and interdisciplinary initiative to improve community well-being while generating cutting edge knowledge about development.

Through a community engagement approach intern will work with communities, health facilities and local secondary and primary schools in rural Tanga region, Tanzania to identify, understand and address community problems. Through this engagement, interns will learn about approaches to development, theories and the history of health development in Tanzania. They will also gain special insight into a particular issue through their community development project. The GHIP includes interns from the following disciplines:

  • Public Health — engaged in comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) issues for adolescent girls, boys and young women health development;
  • Nurses and Midwifery — interns and volunteers’ students/ professionals engaged on maternal and Child health care. They will be stationed in various rural health facilities. 
  • Social Work — interns/volunteers’ will be allocated to the local health facilities, schools, communities and local CSOs dealing with Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Children (VAC)
  • Community Development — interns/volunteers’ will be allocated to the local communities, schools, local health facilities, and local CSOs dealing with women and youth economic empowerment
  • Development Studies — engaged to the local communities, schools, local health facilities, focusing on human development in socio-economic and political development.
  • Clinical Medicine description — engaged in local medical clinics/local health centres focusing on community health education, awareness and disease prevention.
