Study a Bachelor's in Sport Studies in the Netherlands

Sport, Health and Management
The Institute of Sports Studies at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, offers a three year bachelor’s programme, made up of 180 ECTS. This international programme creates innovative (sports)professionals. As a change agent you are able to make a difference at both the individual and societal level. The power of sports lays within the three core values of sports an physical activity:
- sports and physical activity is essential for a healthy lifestyle,
- sports creates business value,
- sports is the social power of communities and nations.
The programme is characterised by its professional focus. Each year you will gain real-life work experience by working in the field. Most modules centre around a practical assignment in a professional organisation. The other courses are designed to prepare you for this challenge.
First year
The first year is the so-called propaedeutic phase (60 ECTS). In this phase you will develop professional competences by working on several projects for individuals, businesses or organisations. Supported by your teachers and fellow students, you will start developing a sense of responsibility from the first day. Sharing knowledge and experiences plays a major role.
Second year
The second year focuses on creating and managing change during a work placement. Your role is primarily tot be a change agent. To be able to do so, you take courses on subjects like practical research, sport development, management and organisation, organisational policy and consultancy.
Third year
In the last year you will work at a professional organisation for your graduation project. During the first phase of the project you will evaluate the organisation. This will result in your research thesis. Based on this thesis you will develop and implement services, products and innovations for the organisation according to the three core values of sports.
A secondary school diploma or international secondary school qualification of an equivalent level to the Dutch VWO secondary school diploma is necessary for admission. German applicants need to have the following diploma: Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife. All other diploma’s will be judged by the Nuffic or Naric. Students who have already passed a relevant propaedeutic phase are also admissable. An assessment is part of the selection procedure and the English language needs to be on a sufficient level.

There are differences in admission procedure depending on whether students live in the Benelux region/Germany or not.
Students from the Benelux region/Germany
After applying, you will be invited for a Matching Day. Attending this Matching Day is obligatory and it is organised in order to assess whether the ambitions, skills and expectations of the student match the content of the programme. The Matching Day consists of a physical challenge, a case study and an interview with one of the staff members. After attending the Matching Day, students will receive feedback and a binding advice regarding what the student needs to do to meet the requirements of the programme.
Students living outside of the Benelux region/Germany
After applying, you will need to hand in a Matching Assignment. This assignment consists of a video recording showing you in a sports-related group setting and will also include a personal presentation. Furthermore you will need to have a reference and will have to write a case study.
Additional requirements for all students
Students admitted to the Sport Studies programme will need to undergo a medical sports test in order to assess their physical fitness.

Hanze UAS Master's Programmes
The Sport Studies bachelor’s degree offers students access to various master’s degrees in Groningen and at various international universities around the world. One of the options open to you after graduation will be the one year Master Healthy Ageing Professional (taught in Dutch) at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences. This enables students to get a Master of Science within four years. Other master’s programmes such as the European Master in Sport and Health (Rome, Italy) or the Master Sport Management (Molde, Norway) will also be open to you.
