Description

For some people, applied community studies is a natural personal and professional development route due to their work in communities either locally or elsewhere in the UK or in the world. For others, it may be an opportunity to have a good grounding in the community, social welfare and charity sectors after studying related courses at college. In addition to learning about social policy and about the management and organisation of welfare, you will learn about particular service provision such as Social Housing, Advice and Guidance, Care and Community development.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • Our excellent relationships with relevant local, national and international agencies such as British Red Cross, Barnardos, and Coventry Refugee Centre;
  • The opportunity to study or apply for a work placement abroad. Previously students have undertaken work experience and placements in Borneo, South Africa, France, Kenya and Finland;
  • A diverse student group providing great opportunities for interactive learning;
  • Experienced, well qualified, research-active teaching staff;
  • Students have used this course to go on to gain accreditation with a number of professional bodies, through experience/postgraduate study, including: British Association of Counselling, Teacher Training Agency, General Social Care Council and Chartered Institute of Housing.

Course Content

This programme is underpinned by a commitment to prepare you for working in the community development and social welfare fields, known as the Third Sector. In the first year you will study: Individual and Group Techniques, Care, Welfare and Community, Human Rights and Welfare Law, Engaging with the Third Sector and Welfare and Social Enterprise.

You will be introduced, through interactive sessions, to the breadth and depth of state, private and voluntary sector organisations.

The second and final years build on this by focusing on gaining practical experience in an agency linked to your areas of interest. You will also study Sociology, Community Development, Community Research, Psychology, Globalisation and social action and a research subject of your choice.

Our course uses a variety of teaching and interactive methods including lectures, seminars, group work, student presentations, visits, guest speakers and placements. Visits this year included the Houses
