Description

Majors should be able to conduct research projects according to the methodologies of the humanities, social, or cognitive sciences and demonstrate intercultural awareness and understanding of the Luso-Brazilian world. Honors students will be able to complete independent research, write a thesis, and defend it before a faculty committee.

Portuguese majors will be able to demonstrate knowledge of current issues and perspectives in literary and cultural studies in Portuguese and the fundamental body of works in Luso-Brazilian literature and culture; critically analyze verbal and visual texts; and demonstrate familiarity with a range of cultural works from different time periods and geographical regions within the Portuguese-speaking world and with the historical phenomena and sociocultural issues that these works negotiate.

Course Content

The Portuguese major program provides students with the opportunity to develop their Portuguese language skills while also studying the literature and culture of Portugal, Brazil and African lands of Portuguese language or influence.

They may also combine their Portuguese studies with other areas to prepare for career opportunities in international business, government, travel or communications, where knowledge of a foreign language and culture is indispensable. A Portuguese major is a good complement to a major in another foreign language or to certicate programs such as the Global Studies Certificate.
