Baird Society Resident Scholar Program for Smithsonian Library Holdings

The world famous Smithsonian Libraries, situated in Washington, DC and New York City, provide Scholarships for doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars who are interested in studying the Libraries’ special and unique holdings. Libraries’ collections include 19th- and early 20th-century World's Fair printed materials; manufacturers' commercial trade catalogs in the National Museum of American History Library used to study American industrialization, mass production, and consumerism; natural history rare books in the Cullman Library (pre-1840 works on topics such as botany, zoology, travel & exploration, museums & collecting, geology, and anthropology); and huge amount of other holdings. The amount of Scholarship is $3,500 per month. You are expected to stay for up to six months.

Applicants should demonstrate the need to consult specific titles from Special Collections of Smithsonian Libraries. They should proof the importance and originality of the chosen topic and ability to carry out the proposed research by using their previous publications. Fluent English is required. In addition, applicants should demonstrate basic knowledge of Latin language, as English translations are sometimes unavailable.

  1. Statement of your research;

  2. Bibliography of titles or collections from Special Collections;

  3. Curriculum Vitae;

  4. Two letters of reference.

Applications must be submitted by January 15, 2018.
