How to stay in Italy after university

You have passed your last session at an Italian university, your diploma has already been written and defended. What's next? There are two options: go home or stay in Italy and look for work. If you chose the second option, then this article is for you.

Your residence permit is already expiring

After graduation, you may find yourself without a residence permit because the police (Questura) issued it to youexactly for the period of study.In this case, apply for a residence permit for job seekers (permesso di soggiorno per attesa occupazione) - it will allow you to stay in the country for another six months and look for work. It will also allow you to work full time. After a year, if you find a job, you convert it into a work residence permit (permesso di soggiorno per lavoro subordinato). The documents for a residence permit for job seekers are minimal. The complete list is as follows (for 2017):

  1. Copy of passport;

  2. Copy of current residence permit;

  3. Certificate confirming that you are currently unemployed (certificazione di disoccupazione);

  4. Tax code (codice fiscale).

Your residence permit does not expire yet

If the police gave you a residence permit with a reserve and after graduationyou have several months to organize with working documents, then you have two paths before you - work as a freelancer or work in a company.

Freelance work

If you want to freelance, you can apply for a residence permit for autonomous work (permesso di soggiorno per lavoro autonomo). An important point is that you should use this opportunity only if you started earning money during your studies. For this type of residence permit, you need to have an individual entrepreneur license (partita iva) and incomeduring the last year. If at the time of graduation you do not have this, then we advise you to move on to the next paragraph.

If you already have an individual entrepreneur license, then a residence permit for autonomous work is your option. You will need to submit the following documents along with the application:

  1. Copy of your passport;

  2. Copy of current residence permit;

  3. Tax Code;

  4. Certificate of registration of an individual entrepreneur license;

  5. Information about income.

Work in the company

Everything is simple - find a job, attach a contract to the application for a new residence permit andeverything. The catch, of course, is in the first part of the plan. You've probably heard about the high unemployment rate in Italy. In fact, the situation is not easy only in the south - there the unemployment rate in the regionsexceeds 16.1% . In the north, the figures are completely different - unemployment fluctuates between 3.7% and 9.9%.So look north of Milan to increase your chances of getting a job. We also offer to use the services of job search agencies (agenzia di lavoro). They will, of course, take a percentage of your first salary for their services, but they will also help with the search.

Once the job is found, bring the following documents to the police along with your residence permit application:

  1. Copypassports;

  2. Copy of current residence permit;

  3. Tax Code;

  4. Work contract;

  5. A copy of the document with information about the last salary;

  6. Information on income for the previous year.
