Programme for volunteer-teachers in Sudan

The Sudan Volunteer Programme (SVP) is intended to enlist resourceful English speakers, seeking a possibility to get acquainted with sophisticated culture of the Arab world, for teaching in Sudan. SVP volunteers teach English at public higher education institutions around Sudan in the form of extra-curricular free or semi-structured discussion classes, more structured communication classes or a combination of both. The volunteers with significant previous teaching experience may have the opportunity to teach full courses or even to train local English language teachers.

Timing

The length of the programme is at least 6 months.

SVP provides

Entry, residency and exit visas free of charge alongside with accommodation and a monthly stipend payment.

Requirements to the volunteers are as follows

  • Graduate or near-graduate students in any discipline.

  • Native English speakers (or a non-native speaker with excellent English language skills).

  • People who are resilient, resourceful, patient, good-humoured, culturally sensitive and enthusiastic about the idea of teaching English.

  • Volunteers should be able to fund their own flights to and from Sudan, and prepared to commit to at least six months in Sudan.

  • Volunteers are contracted to work at their host institutions for 20-25 hours per week (two thirds – teaching hours, one third – time for lesson preparation)

  • There is also a range of non-mandatory charachteristics, such as TEFL certification, knowledge of Arabic language and Islamic cultures (for full list see the SVP website).
