Tuition fees in Australia
While education in Australia is not cheap, it is proportionate to its quality. In 2013 a study demonstrated that in average Austrlian universities are more expensive than their competitors in the US and UK: an average international students should pay more than 32,000 dollars for tuition fees and living costs. However, various opportunities for international students to reduce their costs including generous government scholarships and university programs.
Typical tuition fee for undergraduate degree is between $11,000 and $25,000. Master programs are usually even more expensive: between $15,000 and $30,000. Doctoral degree have similar tuition fees, but typically it's much easier to get a tuition waiver from the university for your PhD program. Moreover, some specific, professional courses may be even more costly (usually the list of the most expensive courses includes medical and veterinary studies). For instance, a Doctoral Programs in Medecine in Australian National University costs more than $50,000 for international students. Tuition fees for domestic students are significantly lower.
For example, BA programs in accounting in the leading university in the country, Australian National University, costs as much as $28,000. Art and Humanities programs are slightly cheaper, while Science and especially medicine programs are more expensive.
The cost of living in Sydney is around $15,000 dollars per year, which may be slightly higher that in smaller cities. Some universities may also require students to pay Student Services and Amenities fee, but it rarely exceeds several hundreds dollars per year. However, in order to get an Australian visa, students should demonstrate the amount of money needed to study in the country.
It is recommended to apply to all available scholarships and fellowships which could reduce the cost of your studies. It should be noticed that most of these scholarships are typically awarded to Master and PhD students, while sometimes exceptionally gifted undergraduates may also receive a financial aid from the government or from the university itself.
