Is the new generation of Americans willing to give up weapons?
Recently the University of Chicago published a survey showing that modern youth strongly support firearms control measures and even want toachieve a complete ban on self-loading weapons.
The GenForward survey, as part of the University of Chicago's Black Youth project, was conducted among 1,940 Americans between the ages of 18 and 30. The study showed that about 57% of respondents would like to ban the sale of semi-automatic weapons.
However, the findings also indicate that 21% of survey participants own a firearm, of which 29% are white respondents and 11% are black Americans.
More than half of the respondents do not believe that a ban on carrying firearms will be introduced, as it would run counter to the right to possess and carry weapons under the Second Amendment to the US Constitution.
Surprisingly, 57% of African Americans support the imposition of restrictions on gun ownership, while the number of whites and Hispanics doing the same is slightly less - 52%.
In addition, 90% of those surveyed said they support all the thorough checks that exist before buying a weapon. The same percentage of people are in favor of toughening penalties for violating the rules for carrying weapons.
The report notes that respondents' opinions were strongly influenced by their personal experiences.About 37% of African Americans, 25% of Hispanics, and 12% of whites and Asians have experienced gun violence in their lives.
"People are constantly dying because there is no control over the use of weapons," says poll participant Kayona Cotrel, whose brother was shot earlier this year.
Despite all these data, 60% of young people are convinced that carrying a pistol is a good way to prevent crime.
As a reminder, Texas has recently renewed the right to bear arms in public places, including college campuses. Of course, many professors are against this, but they have no right to independently prohibit students from bringing weapons into the classroom.
