Free summer schools for journalists abroad

The Summer School in Journalism is an intensive academic program that will help a novice or already experienced professional improve theirskills and get unique experience.Many organizations provide scholarship programs to motivate and help students.Especially for journalists, we have prepared a selection of free summer schools in different parts of the world.

Summer School in Prague for Journalists

Dates: fromJuly 15 to August 5, 2018.

Where: Prague, Czech Republic.

Participants: young journalists, social activists, bloggers.

This summer, Prague will host a summer school for journalism and sociocultural research, organized by the Boris Nemtsov Foundation and the Faculty of Philosophy at Charles University.Within the framework of the school, participants will attend lectures and master classes, take part in practical classes, and, as a result of training, implementing their own media product in any format. The working language of the school is Russian, but knowledge of English is encouraged.School participants will be provided with a flight to Prague and back, accommodation at the Charles University dormitory and meals.

Summer School of Journalism in Florence

Dates: June 11-15, 2018.

Where: Florence, Italy.

Participants: journalists and media professionals.

The Summer School in Florence is organized by the Center for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (CMPF) at the Robert Schumann Center for Advanced Study of the European University (EUI). The theme of the summer school 2018: "Journalism in the era of algorithms and artificial intelligence". Students of the school will learn about the latest developments in the media market, as well as gain hands-on experience and the opportunity to share their ideas and points of view. The working language is English.

The school offers 20 scholarships to participants from EU member states and neighboring countries (suitable for Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and others).The scholarships cover the following expenses: travel expenses (up to € 300), accommodation for 5 nights, tuition fees, all course materials, access to the EUI library, Wi-Fi access to the EUI, social events, lunches and coffee breaks on lecture days.Tuition fee without scholarship: 1000 euros.

Thomson Foundation Summer School London

Dates: 6 August to 7September 2018.

Where: London, England.

Participants: the competition is open to applicants aged 18 and over.

International students have the opportunity to enter Journalism. Now to win a paid place in the 2018 Thomson Foundation Multimedia Summer Course. Also, the winner will be given a job in a British media organization.

The Summer School combines workshops, seminars and practical exercises.It is a series of online courses designed and led by industry experts and a unique platform for sharing knowledge and experience.

Global Minority Rights Summer School in Hungary

Dates: July 16-21, 2018

Where: Budapest, Hungary.

Participants: journalists interested in the topic of equality, minority rights and the resolution of ethnic conflicts; members of civil society organizations; anyone interested in improving their skills in the field of minority protection.

The Tom Lantos Institute (TLI) and the National University of Civil Service (NUPS) are partnering with Middlesex University London (MU) to organize their sixth International Minority Rights Summer School. The six-day interactive summer school will examine current trends and developments in legislation and policy regarding minority rights. The summer school will host a forum to discuss issues related to minority rights with leading experts and practitioners in the field of international human rights, journalism, political science, international relations, and economics. The working language is English.

A small number of scholarships are available for participants from non-Council of Europe countries to cover participation fees and travel expenses to Budapest (excluding airport transfers and visas).Partial scholarships are also available to pay for participation (tuition fees, accommodation, meals and cultural events). Travel expenses in Budapest are not covered by partial scholarships.Participation fee without a scholarship is 150 euros.

Summer Intensive Training in Edinburgh for Student Journalists

Dates: July 5 - 6, 2018.

Where: Edinburgh, Scotland.

Participants: young journalists interested in gaining new experience.

Future News Worldwide Training, which will take place in the heart of Scotland, is a training for those who write, photograph and film. Since 2014, Future News Worldwide has brought together 100 talented, motivated and active student journalist students annually in the UK. Participants receive exclusive training from world renowned editors, reporters, and writers. For 2 days they attend lectures, workshops, panel discussions held by leading media organizations.In 2018, representatives from Google, Facebook, Reuteurs and The Herald are announced in the program.The working language is English. The organizers of the training pay for: round trip airfare, visa cost, accommodation and meals.

Applicant must be between the ages of 18 and 25, enrolled in any undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate program at a university or any higher education institution, and have knowledge of English (IELTS 6.5 orequivalent);

EPRIE Intercultural Exchange Program Summer Seminar

Dates: June 27 to July 8, 2018.

Where: Poland, Germany and Belgium.

Participants: young journalists, practitioners and experts from civil society, media, administration or international organizations, teachers, graduate students, early doctoral students aged 25 to 35 from Europe and EasternAsia.

Within the framework of the EPRIE intercultural exchange program, a seminar “Media in the era of populism and post-truth politics - challenges and opportunities” will be held. Participants explore the political and social aspects of international relations, exchange views and ideas through intensive dialogue in international working groups. Together with media professionals, civil society actors, academics and politicians, participants will focus on the changing role of the media in times of populism and post-truth politics.

All basic expenses during the program (accommodation, transfer and meals) are covered by the organizers. However, participants are responsible for covering the cost of travel from their home country to the first conference venue in Poland and back home from Belgium. Applicants can also apply for financial support.
