Biomechanics is a biomedical section that studies the mechanical properties of living tissues, individual organs and systems, or the organism as a whole, as well as the mechanical phenomena occurring in them. It studies human body as it was a mechanical system. This discipline unites Anatomy, Mathematics and Physics.
One of the subdivisions of Biomechanics is Sports Biomechanics. Its aim is searching the peculiarities of the outstanding athletes’ technique and the finding out the most rational way to participate in sports activities.
Another subdivision of Biomechanics is Clinical Biomechanics. It is dedicated to the study of the motor activity of healthy and sick people, as well as the restoration of this motor activity. One of the main branches of Clinical Biomechanics is the study of the mechanics of human walking.
Biomechanics is related to Occupational Safety and Health - it helps to find out how physical activities affect human body and how to reduce this effect.
Biomechanics can be taught as a part of Biomedicine, Anatomy or Human Biology, or as a separate undergraduate or graduate degree. Some bioengineering degrees may also include courses in Biomechanics.
