Genetic Engineering

Genetic Engineering is one of the methods of Biotechnology (a discipline which studies the possibilities of using living organisms to solve technological problems).

Genetic Engineering is an interdisciplinary field; it includes topics and methods of such disciplines as Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Virology.

Genetic engineering is a more efficient and faster analogue of selection. Unlike selection, which uses only mutations and heredity and does not interfere with the genetic structure, genetic engineering applies molecular cloning, thereby it interferes with the generic apparatus.

Now genetic engineering is widely used in agriculture - it allows the cultivation of new more stable and fertile varieties of grain crops.

In addition, with the help of genetic engineering scientists have brought out a breed of mice for scientific experiments, and also genetic engineering has allowed to start the production of human insulin.

Genetic Engineering of Humans

Nowadays Genetic Engineering can be used as the way to fight some types of infertility of women. Genetic engineering makes it possible to combine the genotypes of one man and two women in some cases. In the future, genetic engineering will help to fight hereditary diseases, including in adults. This will happen with the help of virus particles, which will be embedded in human DNA.

How to study Genetic Engineering?

Genetic Engineering is a part of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, so it is usually taught as a part of study programs in these disciplines. However, on our website you can find several study programs with emphasis on Genetic Engineering, for example,  MA Biomedical Genetics and Tissue Engineering in Brunel University Uxbridge, UK,  or BSc Molecular Biology,Genetics and Bioengineering Program (BIO) in Sabanci University, Turkey. Polymer Engineering

Polymers are inorganic and organic, amorphous and crystalline substances consisting of monomeric units, connected in long macromolecules by chemical or coordination bonds. A polymer is a high-molecular compound: the amount of monomer units in the polymer (degree of polymerization) should be sufficiently large. In many cases, the number of units can be considered sufficient to classify the molecule as a polymer if the molecular properties do not change with the addition of the next monomer unit.
