Germany: paid education in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia

Another federal state in Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, plans to introduce tuition fees for international students.

Last December, the government of Baden-Württemberg, which is home to major cities such as Stuttgart, Heidelberg and Mannheim, introduced tuition fees forforeigners in the amount of € 1500 per semester. Non-EU students who started their studies in the 2017/18 winter semester are covered by the law.
Six months later, the same changes were discussed in North Rhine-Westphalia. The most famous cities of this German state are Cologne, Dusseldorf, Bonn, Aachen, Münster. In June 2017, the Christian Democratic Union entered into a coalition agreement with the Free Democratic Party for 2017-2022, which confirms the intention to make higher education for foreigners paid, as in Baden-Württemberg. The funds received are planned to be used to improve the quality and improve the conditions of education. Scholarships will be awarded to students from developing countries, refugees, applicants with disabilities or financial difficulties.
The final decision on the introduction of tuition fees for foreigners depends on the results of the parliamentary vote, which will take place in the coming weeks.
