GRE: how to pass perfectly

GRE or Graduate Record Examinations is a test required for admission to postgraduate courses at universities in the USA, Canada, Switzerland, Australia and several other countries.This test assesses language, math, analytical and critical thinking skills.

What is important to know about the GRE

International students take the GRE on a par withnative speakers and, if they get a low score in the language section, they can also take the TOEFL exam.

The cost of taking the general GRE test for CIS residents is $ 205, and the cost of the subject test is $ 150.

The test lasts 3 hours and 45 minutes.After each section, you can take a break of one minute, and after the third - 10 minutes.

Test can be taken on a computer at Prometric Test Centers.

The grading scale changed in 2011 - from 200-800 to 130-170 points per section.

When submitting documents to the university, you decide which test results to submit.Thus, you can retake the test several times and no one will see these results.

Verbal Reasoning evaluates your ability to analyze material and doon its basis, conclusions, to determine the author's assumptions, to understand different levels of meaning, such as literal, figurative and author's;choose important passages, distinguish information of primary and secondary importance, generalize the text and understand its structure;understand the meaning of words, sentences and texts and the relationship between words and concepts.

This section includes multiple choice tasks (with one answer and withone or more), selection of a passage from the text that matches the description.There are 20 tasks in total, for which 30 minutes are allocated.

Quantitative Reasoning measures the ability to understand, interpret and analyze quantitative information, solve problems using mathematical models, apply basic skills and basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

A calculator can be used to solve the problems in this section.

The tasks of the section include questions for comparison, tasks for multiple choice (with one answer and with one or more), numerical tasks.A total of 20 tasks, which take 35 minutes.

Analytical Writing tests the skills of clearly articulating and arguing ideas with examples, considering requirements and supporting data, maintaining discussion, and using standard written English.

Section includes "Problem" essay and "Argument" essay.Both tasks are allocated 30 minutes.

The experimental section contains tasks that are planned to be introduced in the future.Despite the fact that the results of the experimental section are not summed up with the others and are not included in the overall test result, it is indistinguishable from the main sections, therefore the tested need to solve the problems of all sections of the test.

Tips when preparing for the test

  1. Start preparing for the test at least 6 months before taking it.
