Harvard Law Students Occupy Their School
A group of Harvard law students in protest took one of the halls of their faculty, chanting that there is no place for "restricted" students and staffcampus. Capture, which started on Monday night, is the reaction of the children to the abnormal atmosphere for training.
A group that called itself “Fix Harvard Law” occupied the Wasserstein Hall at about 20:00, renaming it in turn “Belinda Hall” - with a reference tothe name of a slave of one of the patrons Harvard Law School. About 20 students spent the night in the hall in the company of suitcases and air mattresses, intending to continue the picket, according to The Crimson.
The student rebel protests began in December, after the administration refused to accept eight basic demands. One of the points was the requirement to replace the controversial coat of arms of Harvard Law School with the symbols of the famous slave owner who helped found the school. The protesters also proposed to create a kind of department in support of equality.
In light of recent events, the dean of the law school Martha Minow convened a committee to review the issue of official symbols, as well as to investigate the corruption of portraits of black professors.
“Harvard Law School deeply respects diversity and unity. Minow and Sals faculty deans, staff, alumni, we all try to personally contribute to the creation of an open and developed society to the best of our ability. Faculty leaders are always collaborating with leaders of student organizations on numerous initiatives,” said Harvard Law School spokesman Rob London in his letter to Boston.com.
Students are waiting for change
Mr London said that the results of recent negotiations includedthe idea of choosing a general director for the so-called.a community of equity and fairness, and in addition creating a dedicated oversight body to oversee the campus andorganizing a series of trainings on the prevention of sexual attacks. The faculty also plans to revise its internal policies so as not to single out any of the students.
In response, the reformists say that they are not satisfied with the assistance of the dean's office.
Fix Harvard Law believes the mission of the new agency we require is to educate leaders in a spirit of justice for the welfare society.New leaders must not maintain the habits of aggression and oppression that have stagnated in the bowels of the United States for centuries. ”
The protest group proposes adding cultural awareness classes for students and teachers to the curriculum.
"We want to feel comfortable discussing uncomfortable topics like similarities and differences," Shay Johnson, vice president of the Harvard Law School Black Students Association, told The Crimson.
Until the university yields to their demands, students plan to promote racial and fair equality through their efforts.
“We will shoulder the burden of educating ourselves and others, regardless of Harvard or even in the name of Harvard,” protesters say. "We will force this institution to become the educational environment that it only seemed to be."
