How to apply to universities in New Zealand

The structure of academic year in New Zealand differs slightly from European universities. For example, academic year usually starts in February or in March and lasts to November. Most universities in the country have two terms (semesters, like in Europe), but Victoria University of Wellington has three terms which called trimesters. It doesn't influence the process of study, but prospective students should be aware of these dates in order to prepare their documents in advance.

Universities in New Zealand usually start application campaign in summer and the deadline is usually set in August. There is no central application system in New Zealand and student have to send their documents directly to th universities. All information about deadlines dates as well as about necessary documents are usually available on the universities websites.

Students have to prepare some documents before applying. First of all, they have to provide a personal statement (or motivation letter) in order to explain why do they want to study in New Zealand and why did they choose this particular study program. Personal statement is an indispensable part of your application for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Moreover, all the applicants should provide transcripts (from secondary school or from the previous universities). Grades are important factor which have enormous influence on the chances of your admission. Sometimes test scores may be needed: SAT or ACT for Bachelor studies or GRE for Master and Doctoral programs, but usually tests are not mandatory. Those who apply for research Master or PhD programs should provide a research statement or research proposal. Most universities also require to pay an application fee (usually between $20 and $50).

If student receive a letter of admission, he has to think about the visa. In order to get it, students have to provide a proof of funding, which justifies that student and his family are able to finance the study in New Zealand (it includes tuition fees and costs of living).
