Preparing for admission: how to fill out a resume

It sometimes takes a long time to prepare the application and documents for admission. If we talk about a resume, then this is especially true.It is impossible to get a really high-quality resume in just a week: you need to actively work on your research and engage in social activities. Below we have written about some options for how you can expand your resume.

Volunteering

Look for programs in your country and abroad that will help you put knowledge into practice or give you the opportunity to engage in social activities. The combination of study and participation in projects that are aimed at helping other people will not go unnoticed by the admissions committee.

Those who want to volunteer abroad should not forget about long-term programs that are suitable for the summer months or other free time. They are also great if you want to take a year off from school. For example, take a look at paid programs from the UN, which we wrote about earlier in the group.

Active student life

Participate in university organizations and create your own, if you have no one to share your interests with in existing ones. Here are some examples of things you can do to your advantage.

  • Become a buddy. International students who come to your university often need help. Buddy is the person who will help you with check-in, pick up from the airport, just talk to a new student and show you the city.In this case, you will make new acquaintances and tighten your language.

  • Organization of events. If you are a future event-manager, then almost everything will suit you. If not, take a closer look at socially useful events: donor days, collection of waste paper, organization of lectures, and so on. At the same time, you can link your activity with the chosen specialty: the organization needs marketers, designers and other specialists.

  • Conversation clubs and organizations that are dedicated to the culture and language of a country. If you have dreamed all your life of going to study in France, and there is no French club at the university, do not miss the chance. Create a club where you improve your language and organizational skills. So you show in your resume and motivation letter that you really want to go to this country and are interested in its culture.

Participation in educational events

Summer schools, conferences, seminars are also important. You will receive a certificate that will help you confirm your participation. At summer schools, you can get both credits (ECTS) and courses that the university does not offer.

Attendance at summer schools does not always involve payment, as scholarships are often offered. Here are some examples:

Remember to keep up to date with news and events from your university and other universities to stay informed about events. In most cases, deadlines are set several months before the event itself.Fees are not always available and depend on the conference.

Work and internships

It is better that the work is related to the specialty.Experience in your field will show that you not only have theoretical knowledge, but can also apply it. A letter of recommendation from an employer will be very helpful.

If you want to pursue academic activities, also do not forget about the employment option. You can get on the staff of a research center or go on an internship at a company in the field that is related to your research. It is possible that you will also collect valuable data there.

Remember that priority is given to your academicacademic performance. So look for jobs with a suitable schedule and don't overwhelm yourself. Participation in student organizations does not imply day-to-day involvement, and most positions do.

Mobility and exchange programs

Short-term training programs should also be included in the resume. You can take part in both school and university. Your experience suggests that you have mastered the language well and already know about the culture and life in the country.

Most short-term programs are for PhD students, but options can be found for bachelors as well. For example, the University of Auckland in New Zealand offers scholarships for short-term research programs through Summer Research Scholarships. You can work and receive advice from a supervisor for 10 weeks.Provide a stipend of NZ $ 6,000.

Scientific publications

Universities ask about the availability of publications. More often than not, you must attach a complete work or a link to publish it. Texts in citation databases are especially important. We wrote in more detail about the publication of academic texts here.
