What is the right way to read scientific articles?

We talked a while ago about why it's so important to read scientific articles. But they are typically 10-20 pages long, and they are difficult to read. Today we have a few tips on how to read scientific publications and focus on what's important.

Define the purpose of reading the article

Before you start, it's worth deciding why you decided to read the article in the first place. There are several ways to do this: to look at the basics, to get an idea for your own research, or to get a theory confirmed or disproved. Understanding your purpose may tell you which parts of the article you should focus on.

Read the abstract

In this part of the article, the author briefly describes the main purpose of the research, relevance of the topic, methods of analysis, results, and conclusions. It should be required reading, as it tells you whether the article meets your requirements, is relevant, and is relevant to your topic.

The abstract should be read by the author.

Don't read every word

Not all material in an article is required reading. Very often it happens that the reader only needs to carefully read the results and interpretation, where the authors describe the main conclusions and their application. Whereas it does not always make sense to read carefully about the methods and details of exactly how the author conducted the study.

Please pay attention to graphs and tables

This advice is mentioned by many experts. Studying the illustrations can save you hours of text because they contain the main information in the article. Study the information in the tables and charts in the body of the article, and if you don't understand most of it, read the relevant section in the publication.

Make notes

Write out important information in short talking points. This will help you follow the authors' thoughts smoothly and not miss any important details that were mentioned earlier. What's more, this will help you quickly refresh your memory of the article's main conclusions in the future.

We hope this makes it easier for you to understand academic papers and that you will be even more successful in your studies!
