Battle for places in German universities: foreign applicants have already lost
According to statistics, the situation in the educational market has improved significantly compared to previous years. However, many residents of Germany and foreigners interested in studying there cannot agree with this. The fact is that currently only 51% of Germans who graduate from high school with the highest score go to university. What can we say about foreigners, whose admission is inevitably associated with bureaucratic obstacles?
It is quite obvious that foreign applicants with a low GPA score have few chances to go to university. However, the statistics are shocking: only 37% of applicants from other countries with the highest average mark in the certificate receive a place in the university.
However, research by the Allensbach Institute shows that foreign students are more ambitious than their German counterparts. Thus, 61% of already established or future migrants want to achieve more than their parents, while among the German respondents there are only 41% of them.
In this regard, last week a representative of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development demanded that German politicians increase the chances of higher education in Germany for foreign applicants.“ Given the dual education system, Germany may well decide to integrate migrants into the labor market for mutual pleasure.”
However, until this happens, those wishing to study in Germany should pay attentionon the statistics of demand (applicants) and supply (places in universities). For example, in the region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, there are approximately 104 places per 100 applicants. At the same time, compared to Bavaria (89 places per 100 applicants) and Baden-Württemberg (87 places per 100 applicants), where 90% of graduates find work, only 64% of those who graduate in Mecklenburg are successful in their careers.
