MIT Journalism Fellowship

Each year, the Knight Science Journalism Program (KSJ) offers 10 journalists a scholarship for nine months of the academic year from August to May, which will allow them to study more deeply science, technology andthe art of journalism, focus on specialization in science and study at some of the world's leading research universities.

Each participant develops their own course of study with advice offered by the director and staff of KSJ .Fellows are required to prepare a research project during the academic year, which can form the basis of a future story, a book, or simply a detailed account in one of the areas of science and present the results in a formal presentation at the end of the program.

Requirements for participants:

  • Work as a full-time journalist (full-time or freelanceemployee)

  • At least three full years of experience in science, technology, environment or medicine

  • Work as reporters, writers, editors, producers, illustrators, filmmakers orphotojournalists.This includes work for newspapers, magazines, television, radio and digital media

To get a scholarshipThe selected candidates must agree to the following requirements:

  • Permanently located in the Boston / Cambridge area during the academic year: from August 12, 2019 to May 29 2020 year.

  • Attend field trips, workshops, and required training sessions offered by the Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT.

  • Design a curriculum that includes at least one science subject per semester.

  • Do not engage in professional activities during the program, unless received written permission from the program manager.

  • Create an elaborate research project during the academic year.A research project can be a book, but fellows cannot sell applications for new books during the fellowship program, nor can they sign contracts to write a book.

  • International applicants must obtain a valid visa from the US Department of State upon receipt of the scholarship;the visa is usually sponsored by MIT. As part of the visa application process, a language proficiency test (such as TOEFL) may be required.

Scholarship Semifinalists will be notified by email by April 5, 2019. Skype interviews with the program administrator will be scheduled for all semi-finalists wishing to participate further in the competition.

Selected scholarship candidates will be notified in the first week of May 2019.
