Learning English from Movies and TV Shows

  1. Split the movie into 10-15 minute segments.

  2. Watch the chosen section with English subtitles first. As you watch it, write down the words and phrases that interest you in the Movie Book. Don't write down everything, because you will get bored.

  3. Watch the excerpt again, but without subtitles. To work with just one & ‖ piece & raquo; you will need about 1-1.5 hours. That is, in a week, you can handle the full movie. But we still recommend you start with sitcoms, because they have all the everyday vocabulary you need to survive in a foreign country.

  4. Please pay attention not only to unfamiliar words, but also to words you would recognize in writing but don't understand aurally. In fluent speech, some syllables and endings are "eaten up. Over time, you will learn to hear these transitions. Listen to the incomprehensible moments a few times and say them with the actor, trying to mimic his pronunciation and intonation.

Don't demand super results from yourself right away. Here's a rough idea of what listening progress looks like:

  • You pick up only character names and individual words from the flow.

  • You recognize some phrases and sentences, but you struggle to understand the overall meaning

  • Your sense of language, and the gestures and facial expressions that allow you to understand what they're saying, even if you don't know many words.

  • You understand almost everything you hear.

You need to see more than 2-3 movies to be on the last step, so go ahead and pick yourself something amazing for the evening right now. By the way, what movies would you recommend to our subscribers?
