University of Texas professor resigned for safety

Professor Daniel Hemermesh does not want to continue working because of the weapons law, which is due to come into force on August 1, 2016.

A professor of economics at the University of Texas has resigned, considering unacceptable the law on carrying weapons at the university, which will be effective soon. The law stipulates that every licensed student will be able to carry a weapon for personal safety. Also, students will not be required to inform anyone about carrying a firearm.

Proponents of the law argue that it will help students and teachers protect themselves in the event of terrorist attacks. But the honored teacher does not understand such a precaution, considers it unacceptable for the university. "After all, students can use weapons for other purposes, but I did not subscribe to this" - he writes in a letter to the school director.

The employment contract was concluded before 2017, but the professor does not intend to stay and wants to leave.

"The problem is that in Texas it is difficult to find a job in this area, so I don't have so many options," Hemermesh admits.

However, he found an alternative - the University of Sydney. And he will start teaching there next fall. The professor added that he cannot believe that most advocate such "dangerous precautions."

As you know, the University continues to work on the effective implementation of the law in the state of Texas.
