How do Chinese students prevent Russian students from entering South Korea?
The ill-considered admission of large numbers of Chinese students to universities in South Korea thwarted attempts to globalize local campuses, making it impossible for them to accept an equal number of students from all over the world...
According to The Korea Times, in most universities in South Korea, Chinese students account for more than half of the total number of international students. This imbalance is destroying the diversity of the student community and causing conflicts between local students and their foreign peers. The newspaper also reports that the five universities in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, boast the largest number of Chinese students - about 85% of the total foreign students. The largest number of Chinese students (2662) was accepted in 2015 by Kyung Hee University. In 2015 Kyung Hee University admitted 2,662 Chinese students, the highest rate of any university in South Korea.
Second place in this ranking is Dongguk University (2,189 Chinese students), followed by Konkuk University (2182), as well as Koryo University (2151) and Songyungwan University (1856). According to The Korean Times, 147 universities in South Korea have enrolled more students from China than any other country.
Regional education specialists criticized local institutions, noting that they went too far in accepting Chinese students without pre-setting the required level of knowledge and proficiency in Korean. Based on this, it can be assumed that many enrolled students do not have enough knowledge and skills to study at this level, and universities simply took advantage of the temporary lack of restrictions on the admission of foreign students.
As a result, large numbers of Chinese citizens find it difficult to adjust to life in South Korea, and many also report that universities do not have the necessary student support services.According to government figures, 1,941 Chinese students were expelled from Korean universities last year as a result of poor academic performance. Themthe number was 46% in relation to the total number of expelled students.
“Large numbers of Chinese students are dissatisfied with the irresponsible enrollment policies of Korean universities,” a spokesman for a university in Seoul told The Korea Times. .“Some even develop anti-Korean sentiments after studying at local universities,” he added.
Initially, the Ministry of Education planned to admit 200,000 international students by 2020, which should contribute to the globalization and diversity of the student community, as well as to increase the competitiveness of South Korean universities in the international education market. However, it only led to widespread thoughtless recruitment of students from China.
“Although the Ministry of Education, removing all restrictions on admission, urged universities to invite as many foreign students as possible, most universities are not ready to provide them with comfortable conditions andquality education ”- concluded the representative of Seoul University .
