Do you dream of working towards an environment where health is a key issue? Are you interested in solving the environmental challenges that we are already facing? Do you like working with different issues in an interdisciplinary manner? The Environmental Engineering programme at Aalborg University offers you the opportunity to participate in the development of new processes and technology, which can form the base for sustainable energy production and resource management.

DEGREE DESIGNATION

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING

(DANISH TITLE: CIVILINGENIØR / CAND.POLYT.) (STARTING IN SEPTEMBER)

With a Bsc in Engineering you can enroll in the Master of Science in Engineering in Environmental Engineering.

Environmental Engineering can also be studied as a Master of Science in Technology progamme. Applicants who hold another qualifying education than a BSc in Engineering can apply for this programme, i.e. for instance applicants with a Bachelor in Biology.

About the study programme

The programme is cross-disciplinary, and you use your knowledge within chemistry, physics, biology, and microbiology to investigate and solve environmental challenges in cities, industry, agriculture and nature.

Within Environmental Engineering, you can for example work with energy from biomass and waste, biological air cleaning in industry and animal farming, methods for rapid detection of bacteria in drinking water, biological methods for assessment of water quality in rivers and lakes or improvement of indoor climate in buildings at contaminated soil sites.

During the Environmental Engineering programme, you will gain competencies and tools needed to actively participate in the development of our society in a sustainable direction.

Semester structure

1st semester

Solid waste management and contaminated soil engineering. You will work with energy and material recovery from waste, aiming at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and advanced methods for assessing and remediating soil contamination, as well as improving indoor climate in buildings on contaminated land.

  • Soil and Groundwater – Risk, Resource and Remediation Analysis (15 ECTS)

  • Choose between Experimental Hydrogeology (5 ECTS) and Global Change Biology (5 ECTS)

  • Environmental Soil Science and Geostatistics (5 ECTS)

  • Groundwater Modeling and Geohydrology (5 ECTS)

2nd semester

Wastewater treatment design and surface water (lakes, streams and coastal) quality. You will learn to design and optimise wastewater treatment with respect to both treatment quality and energy efficiency, or you can work with advanced methods for assessing and improving the quality of surface water bodies.

  • Choose between Wastewater Treatment Systems (15 ECTS) and Lake and Coastal Marine Ecosystems (15 ECTS)

  • Modelling the Aquatic Environment (5 ECTS)

  • Wastewater Treatment (5 ECTS)

  • Marine Pollution (5 ECTS)

3rd semester

Students' choice of topic (30 ECTS). You have the possibility of starting your thesis work for a 1 year thesis. During this semester, you are free to choose a topic of your liking, possibly in collaboration with your supervisor.

4th semester

Master's thesis (30 ECTS). Here you may continue your work from the previous semester, or you may choose a different topic.

You can choose to follow all four semesters, or one or two of the first three semesters. In order to get the full Master's degree, it is required that you follow all four semesters.

In order to apply for the Master of Science in Engineering programme, you are required to have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in:Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Environmental Biotechnology or the like.Environmental Engineering can also be studied as a Master of Science in Technology progamme. Applicants who hold another qualifying education than a BSc in Engineering can apply for this programme, i.e. for instance applicants with a Bachelor in Biology. Please make sure to send your application form and further documentation via post to the International Office by the required deadline.Furthermore, please note that the official language requirements for international students applying to Aalborg University are:IELTS (academic test): 6.5TOEFL (paper-based): 550TOEFL (computer-based): 230TOEFL (internet-based): 80Cambridge ESOL: C1 English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL paper-based test score : 550 TOEFL iBT® test: 80
