The Master of Legal Practice is designed for LLB, LLB(Hons) and JD graduates who wish to be admitted to legal practice and to undertake further graduate study in law and/or to advance their career in professional practice.

Students have the option of exiting with a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice after the initial 48 units, or continuing study to complete the Masters. Once students have completed the initial 48 units of LEGW coded courses, they will be able to apply for direct admission as a legal practitioner in most Australian jurisdictions, or reciprocal admission in the others.

The program offers a variety of courses focussing on developing depth and sophistication in areas of legal practice and/or other sub-disciplines. The program brings together academics and experienced practitioners to offer students a synthesis of the academic and the practical towards an aim of practice informed by evidence and theory.

The Master of Legal Practice requires the completion of 72 units, of which:

48 units must come from completion of courses from the subject area LEGW Legal Workshop

24 units must come from completion of 8000-level courses from the subject are LAWS Law

 

The 72 units must consist of:

30 units from completion of the following compulsory courses:

LEGW8141 Becoming a Practitioner

LEGW8142 Professional Practice Core (24 units)

 

A minimum of 3 units from completion of LEGW8143 Legal Practice Experience

 

A minimum of 6 units from completion of legal practice courses from the following list:

LEGW8114 Wills Probate and Administration Practice

LEGW8135 Consumer Law Practice

LEGW8136 Employment and Industrial Law Practice

LEGW8118 Administrative Law Practice

LEGW8137 Planning and Environment Law Practice

LEGW8106 Criminal Law Practice

LEGW8107 Family Law Practice

LEGW8124 Government Law Practice

 

A minimum of 12 units from completion of advanced legal practice courses from the following list:

LAWS8030 Advanced Succession Practice

LAWS8074 Personal Injuries Compensation

LAWS8131 Commercial Drafting

LAWS8132 Advocacy

LAWS8143 Federal Litigation

LAWS8150 Principles of Evidence Under the Uniform Act

LAWS8155 Human Rights Litigation

LAWS8156 Commonwealth Compensation Law

LAWS8301 Graduate Research

A maximum of 12 units from completion of further 8000-level courses in the subject area LAWS Law

Bachelor LLB, LLB (Hons) or Juris Doctor or equivalent. The Diploma in Law awarded by the Legal Profession Admission Board is also accepted for admission to this program.

All applicants must meet the University's English Language Admission Requirements for Students

Students that have completed all compulsory courses and have a maximum of 12 units (2 courses) to complete in their LLB, LLB (Hons) or JD program may apply for concurrent enrolment to complete their remaining electives at the same time as commencing the first courses of the MLP.
