The Applied Statistics specialization is oriented toward practical statistical situations. It aims at teaching data analytic procedures and their applications to statistical problems. In keeping with this goal, students are required to become skilled at statistical computing and participate actively in the consulting projects that arise in the Statistical Consulting Laboratory. This degree will prepare students for careers in government, industry, and quantitative research in other scientific disciplines.

All students are expected to take the Applied Statistics Qualifying Examination, which consists of an in-class examination and a Data Analysis Report. All students seeking the MA in Statistics with the Applied Statistics Specialization need to pass the Applied Statistics Qualifying Examination with at least a “MA Level” pass. Each student has two attempts to pass the exam. 

Continuation to the Ph.D. is subject to the student’s academic performance being deemed excellent by all standards that the department uses to assess degree progress such as: exams, grades, coursework, and timely progress toward the degree. Students must demonstrate an ability to work independently and to make innovative and original contributions to the critical literature of the field.

  • Received a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited university prior to the quarter for which the applicant seeks admission
  • At least a B average in undergraduate coursework
  • All applications require a non-refundable application fee of $​105 for domestic applicants, and $125 for international applicants.
  • Statement of Purpose, Personal Achievements/Contributions, and Resume or CV (submitted in the online application)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (submitted online). In exceptional circumstances, this requirement may be waived with the approval of the Actuarial Program Committee.
  • GRE General test scores.
  • Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions (submitted online)
  • TOEFL Internet Based Test (IBT): 80 , TOEFL Computer Based Test (PBT): 550 
  • IELTS Minimum Band Score: 7
