Oceans, seas, estuaries and lakes are major providers of ecosystem goods and services such as food, tourism and coastal protection. In many cases, exploitation levels have bypassed the carrying capacity of these ecosystems leading to devastating effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

To preserve marine biodiversity and its ecosystem functions innovative and sustainable solutions are necessary. Therefore, young professionals are needed with a integrative approach of marine ecosystem management.

The MSc Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management (MAM) is a two year programme, which comprises of 120 credits (ECTS). The programme consists of various courses, an internship and a research thesis which are carried out within one of the three specialisations.

You start the MAM programme by taking courses that will give you a common basis on aquaculture and marine resources management.

Then you chose one of three specialisations in which you will take specialisation courses, these will prepare you for your thesis.

In the Academic Consultancy Cluster you will share (interaction) and intergrade your knowledge with (the knowledge of) other students in multidisciplinary teams.

Compulsary courses

Compulsary courses must be successfully completed by all students taking part in the MAM programme:

  • Marine systems (6 ECTS): In this course you will learn the principles of (marine) ecology and the governance of marine systems. An essential part of the course is a weekend on the island of Texel, including a boat trip on the North Sea and the Wadden Sea.
  • Life history of aquatic organisms (6 ECTS): This course deals with the biology and ecology of aquatic organisms, with an emphasis on life history theory. The focus in this course lies with animal species, especially those which are important for fisheries, aquaculture and nature conservation.
  • Environmental quality and governance (6 ECTS): This course enables students to explore the possible role of science in the public policy process by bringing together key concepts in environmental toxicology, water quality, public administration, and environmental governance.

Specialisations

The MSc Aquaculture and marine resources management offers three specialisations:

  • Aquaculture
  • Marine resources and ecology
  • Marine Governance

Specialisation courses

Within a specialisation you take one specialisation course and a thesis preparing course (restricted optional). Which courses are required varies among specialisation.

Academic Consultancy Cluster

In the Academic Consultancy Cluster you either follow the course Academic Consultancy Training or the course European Workshop Environmental Sciences and Management.

In both courses you work in a multidisciplinary (and preferably multicultural) group of students. Together you will design a (environmental) project commissioned by a client.

The courses train you in the application of master level academic skills in an almost professional setting of a (small) consultancy team working for a true client on a real work assignment.

Optional courses

Optional courses can be selected from any relevant MSc programme offered either at Wageningen University of any other academic institution (subject to approval).

The combination of specialisation and optional courses gives students the oppurtunity to graduate with the profile that is tailor made to their specific interests.

Courses of the MSc Aquaculture and Marine resource management are listed in the online Study Handbook.
