As of September 2015 this specialisation will be offered as two separate specialisations: Archaeology of the Near East and Classical and Mediterranean Archaeology.

The Near East (modern Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Turkey) is often regarded the cradle of civilisation for the period from Prehistory up to the Early Medieval Period. This master's specialisation will use primary archaeological data to investigate key developments such as the origins of farming and sedentary life, and the emergence of complex urban societies and writing. Evidently, the Mediterranean region plays a crucial role in many cultural developments and has had a major influence on our modern world. Special attention will be paid to the houses, society, urbanism, landscape archaeology, architecture and art of this region. Leiden University hosts one of the best libraries in the world for these fields of expertise, and is therefore able to provide a wealth of research resources for students of the Mediterranean and the Near East.
