Art studies — Independent and Individualized Major

Description

Students who wish to pursue individualized majors in the liberal arts and sciences other than those regularly available through the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) may make an application in writing to the SAS dean for undergraduate education. To be considered for approval, applications must include a statement describing the student's educational objectives, a proposed program of courses, and the signatures of three faculty sponsors from at least two different departments.

Two of the three faculty sponsors must be faculty members of the School of Arts and Sciences, and one must agree to serve as major adviser. Application forms for the individualized major can be obtained in the Office of Academic Services of the School of Arts and Sciences. Satisfactory completion of this major leads to a bachelor of arts degree.

Course Content

Students in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences may elect to design an independent major program if none of the existing undergraduate programs satisfies their needs. Students considering submitting a proposal for an independent major should initially consult the program director for instructions.

Proposals must include a rationale for the program, the degree sought, a list of courses taken (and to be taken) in fulfillment of the school's degree requirements, and the signature of a faculty member who has agreed to serve as adviser. Students ordinarily should submit proposals prior to the beginning of the junior year. Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees available.
