Course Content

Core units

English and Skills for University Study

You will develop your English communication skills and learn a range of study skills including: writing and reading strategies; presentation and seminar participation; organisation of time and materials; meeting deadlines; and responding to feedback.

By the end of the programme you will be able to use English language in your own academic work; give well-structured presentations; confidently answer follow-up questions and contribute to seminar discussions; take notes from readings and lectures; plan, develop and write well-structured academic essays; and be confident in self-directed learning strategies.

You will also study for the IELTS exam covering all four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) in order to be fully prepared to take an IELTS exam at the end of your academic year in order to progress onto the degree programme.

Subject-specific units

Introduction to Business Studies

You will look at the operational and strategic problems facing business people in the modern market economy. The unit will focus on a wide range of issues, such as management, human resource practice, marketing and ethical aspects.

Principles of Economics

This unit introduces you to the basics of economics including: economic systems; types of goods; the allocation of resources; elasticity; price controls; types of markets; cost and revenue; economies of scale; and market failure.

Elective units

Introduction to Financial Accounting

This unit provides you with a sound foundation in the basic principles of financial accounting. Learn about double entry book keeping, preparation of trial balances, profit and loss statements, depreciation, limited companies, manufacturing accounts and the interpretation of accounts.

OR

English Legal System

During this unit you will learn about law, the relationship between law, justice and morality, the sources of law, including British and European (EU) legislation and the doctrine of precedent, the Civil and Criminal Courts, and the role of Judiciary.
