Chemistry examines the processes that produce our food, clothes, medicine, and hundreds of new materials we use every day. Chemists have developed compounds that save lives and reduce suffering, such as cortisone and penicillin. They have developed fertilizers and pesticides to improve food production. And they have made important contributions to radiation therapy, water purification, and DNA fingerprinting.Geology is the study of the EarthпПСits structures, history and behaviour. It is the science of natural processes such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, reef formations and ocean-floor mineral deposits, and one that examines such processes as they are recorded in the earthпПХs crust. Geologists are trained specialists who work in areas such as mineral and petroleum discovery, site selection for dams and bridges, and building design in earthquake-prone regions of the world.
