It covers major religious traditions such as Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and folk religions, examining their origins, evolution, and roles in Chinese society. Students are introduced to classical texts, religious rituals, philosophical debates, and the social functions of religion throughout Chinese history. The curriculum also emphasizes the interaction between religion and other societal factors including politics, literature, arts, and economics. By engaging with both traditional and modern contexts, students gain a nuanced perspective on how Chinese religions influence modern life and global interactions. The program includes courses on religious thought, ritual practices, religious festivals, and sacred spaces, providing students with an experiential understanding of religious activities. Additionally, research methods in anthropology, history, and theology are incorporated to enhance analytical skills. Graduates of the program are prepared for careers in academia, cultural preservation, religious studies, and cultural consultancy, among other fields. They will have the language skills and cultural knowledge necessary for engaging with Chinese religious communities, scholarly research, and international dialogues on religion. The program aims to foster a deep respect and understanding of Chinese religious diversity and its significance in shaping the cultural identity of China. It benefits from Fudan University's rich academic resources, including extensive library collections, research centers, and connections with religious institutions and scholars. Students are encouraged to participate in internships, field studies, and seminars to enrich their practical knowledge.
