Civil Engineering is the branch of engineering which designs and constructs large structures, such as bridges, roads, tunnels, tall buildings and flood defences. The overall aim of this MSc programme is to develop the skills needed to play a leading role in this exciting profession.
The programme is ideally suited to students who have completed a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering, but is also suitable for graduates from allied disciplines, such as environmental, mechanical, architectural or building services engineering. The Masters course aims to provide a route for graduates in Civil or Structural Engineering to fulfil the learning requirements for Chartered Engineer status.
The programme builds upon the engineering knowledge and skills developed at first degree level with a stimulating and challenging postgraduate programme of study that will extend your understanding and analytical skills. You will develop a critical awareness of current issues in the field, as informed by ongoing research from LJMU's Built Environment and Sustainable Technologies (BEST) Research Institute.
You will also evaluate the latest research and design methodologies, increase your understanding of ethical issues related to civil engineering, and your responsibilities with regards to sustainable construction.
In addition, you will develop greater understanding of management principles and management strategies and be able to critically evaluate design, construction and operation within the context of both regulation and current developments.
Importantly, you will also be able to apply appropriate technical solutions to the analysis and evaluation of complex design problems.
