Classical Art and Archaeology

The Classical Art and Archaeology program at Royal Holloway offers students a comprehensive and immersive exploration of the ancient worlds of Greece and Rome through the study of their art, architecture, and material culture. This degree combines the rigorous analysis of classical artifacts with the contextual understanding of historical, social, and cultural developments that shaped the ancient Mediterranean. Students will engage with a diverse range of disciplines, including art history, archaeology, anthropology, and history, gaining valuable skills in critical analysis, research, and interpretation. The program features a blend of lectures, seminars, practical workshops, and participation in archaeological excavations or site visits, providing practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge. Core modules cover subjects such as Greek and Roman art and architecture, ancient sculpture, pottery, painted art, and the ethical considerations of collecting and conserving antiquities. The program also offers specialized modules on topics like classical mythology, hellenistic art, and the social and political contexts of ancient art forms. Students are encouraged to develop their own research interests, culminating in a dissertation that allows for in-depth academic inquiry. The course prepares graduates for careers in museums, archaeology, heritage management, academic research, and further postgraduate study. Core modules

• Research Training in Classical Archaeology (this module carries no weighting, but is a compulsory part of the MA)
• Dissertation in the field of classical archaeology or art-history (60 credits)

Optional modules

• 80 credits from courses on classical archaeological or art-historical subjects chosen from the current list of available MA courses
• 40 credits from courses of any type from a list of available MA courses

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree (Bakalavr). Students who have successfully completed a four year Bachelor's degree (Baklavar) in an appropriate subject with good grades/GPA and at a reputable university will be considered for entry to a Royal Holloway Master's degree programme. Exact requirements will depend upon the programme, but most departments will ask for a minimum final grade of either 3.5/5.0 (70%) or 4.0/5.0 (80%).
• Specialist Diploma. Students who have successfully completed a Specialist Diploma in an appropriate subject with good grades/GPA and at a reputable university will be considered for entry to a Royal Holloway Master's degree programme. Exact requirements will depend upon the programme, but most departments will ask for a minimum final grade of either 3.5/5.0 (70%) or 4.0/5.0 (80%). 
• IELTS score of 6.5 with 7.0 in writing and no sub-score below 5.5 for non-native English speaking applicants.
• You are required to register your one reference, even if you have uploaded a copy of their reference. You may be contacted to submit a 2nd reference if we need further information to assess your suitability for the programme you have applied for.
• Copies of the transcripts from your undergraduate degree (this can be a transcript of your progress so far if you have not yet completed it)
• Copies of any other qualifications you have taken that are relevant to your chosen course
• A supporting statement, explaining your motivation to study your chosen course
• One academic reference - you can either upload a copy (this is the quickest option) or your referee can enter them directly into the online system once you've completed the application
