Conservation — Restoration

The Masters programme in Conservation and Restoration conducted by SUPSI as part of the Swiss Conservation-Restoration Campus teaches students the specialist skills required for the restoration of wall paintings, stucco-work and stone surfaces.

Career prospects

A Master's Degree in Conservation and Restoration is the qualification required in order to operate autonomously and independently (freelance) as a restorer throughout Europe, including Switzerland. Those holding the qualification are also eligible to enrol for PhD programmes at a number of universities outside Switzerland.

Skills

The didactic programme focuses on site and laboratory practice, integrated with scientific methodologies and innovative techniques that can help students to develop independent experimental and research skills.

Admission to the Master's programme in Conservation-Restoration is subject to having passed an aptitude test which is open to applicants with a Bachelors Degree in Conservation or with a qualification considered as equivalent.The aptitude test assesses the following aspects: professional and academic curriculum, manual skills in the specialist sector, the ability to understand observed phenomena of alteration and degradation and the methodological approach.

Students may be entitled to receive Cantonal Scholarships, provided they meet certain income conditions and provided they are resident in Ticino. For foreign students, and under certain circumstances, SUPSI may liaise with private institutions offering scholarships.
