With the advent of distributed sensor networks and cheap data storage, the acquisition of large datasets is now common both in academic science and industrial practice. Similarly, ongoing research projects are collecting large amounts of biological data that can revolutionise the future of medicine. Mathematicians and computer scientists are providing appropriate and up-to-date tools to deal with these large datasets.

Data science at Sussex can count on a unique interdisciplinary environment including collaboration with life sciences and engineering and informatics. Our faculty will introduce you to the theory and practice of state-of-the- art data science with applications ranging from mathematics to physics, from biology to
computer science.

This MSc is aimed at those who have an interest in data science and its applications to sciences and technology. This course is for you if you are looking to move into industry including financial services, or to pursue further studies such as a PhD with focus on statistics or on applied sciences.

  • Our courses are taught by world-renowned faculty with a strong background in relevant areas of research. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) 81 per cent of our research outputs were categorised as world-leading or internationally excellent. Mathematics at Sussex is ranked in the top 25 in the UK in The Guardian University Guide 2017.
  • Mathematics is crucial to everyday life, from being the basis of internet banking security to verifying the safety of pharmaceuticals through statistics, and offers many career options.
  • Members of the Department maintain many collaborative links with other departments both in the UK and overseas.
  • The Department fosters an intellectually stimulating environment in which students are encouraged to develop research interests with the support of the faculty.
