The program is characterized by rigorous core coursework and flexibility in electives. In addition to taking a variety of master's-level courses, students with sufficient preparation are encouraged to enroll in a combination of doctoral-level courses in economics or graduate-level courses in political science, public policy, finance, statistics, and mathematics. The curriculum is intended to be completed in four semesters.
Throughout their participation in the program, students compile a portfolio that tracks their academic growth and showcases their accomplishments. The portfolio is composed of research papers, presentations, and other professional documents. It serves as a valuable tool for applying to jobs or doctoral programs.
The program requires a minimum of 30 graded credit hours of coursework in economics and related fields. Students can choose from concentrations in either Economics or one of two finance specializations: Financial Economics or Applied Financial Economics. Within each of the two major areas of concentration, students’ course selections are based on their specific interests and on “track” recommendations made by their academic advisors in order to meet their longer-run goals. Courses offered through the Graduate School, listed as "GS" courses, do not count toward the 30-credit requirement.
Students seeking to do graduate work at Duke University for degree purposes must hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree or the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
