If you are interested in understanding education from a variety of perspectives –sociological, philosophical, historical, political – then education at Newcastle will appeal to you.

Our wide-ranging Education BA Honours degree provides you with an international insight into the role of education in society.

You will be equipped with skills for employment in a diverse range careers including heritage or museum education, community work, and information management such as e-learning.

Our degree is divided into three strands:

• Education: Critical & Contextual Studies provides you with knowledge and understanding in the fields of the sociology, philosophy and history of education.
• International Perspectives and Contexts provides you with knowledge and understanding of the role education in international development (including the use of innovative technologies), British and comparative education.
• Career / Employability equips you with critical and practical experience of studying and learning. Within this strand you will have the opportunity to study at least one foreign language.

The diverse research interests and expertise of staff allow us to offer you a broad range of topics and perspectives in studying education, such as:

Course Content

Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

Please be aware that programme modules do change and therefore may differ for your year of entry.

Stage 1

At Stage 1 you will be are introduced to the key theories and concepts in the area of education.

Teaching is aimed at enabling you to make connections between knowledge, understanding and subject skills particularly in the workplace context through your engagement with the three generic strands of the programme.

Stage 2

At this Stage you will build upon the basic knowledge and understanding from Stage 1 and develop a more specialised and sustained engagement with the areas of study.

You will be introduced to the research element of the degree leading at Stage 3 to the dissertation.

Stage 3

The emphasis at Stage 3 is on you obtaining a deep and critical awareness of specific aspects of education both in its national and international contexts.

You further refine and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding, cognitive and key skills.

You become more deeply aware of the importance of attention to detail, argument, criticality, ambiguity and complexity.

AAB-ABB excluding General Studies. No specific subjects are required.

Scottish Qualifications

AAABB-AABBB at Higher Grade. Combinations of Highers and Advanced Highers accepted.

International Baccalaureate

A minimum of 34-35 points including three subjects grade 5 or above at Higher Level.

Irish Leaving Certificate

A1A1A1B1B-A1A1B1B1B at Higher Level.

Access Qualifications

Level 3 units in Social Sciences, Cultural or Media Studies are desirable. At least 30 level 3 credits at Distinction and in addition at least 15 level 3 credits at a minimum of Merit.

BTEC Level 5 HND

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC National Diploma)

Cambridge Pre-U
