Energy Systems

The Master of Energy Systems brings together engineers, scientists and specialists in economics, finance and energy systems to provide a unique course that will prepare you for a role in the energy sector.

The Master of Energy Systems has been developed in close consultation with industry. It is strongly supported by an Industry Advisory Panel that includes senior representatives from industry and government. This ensures that students benefit from a relevant program, internship opportunities and contact with future employers.

You will learn from specialists in renewable, thermal and nuclear energy and transport. You will acquire the skills to make informed decisions that incorporate technical, economic, environmental and social considerations.

This program will suit graduates of engineering, science, business, finance and economics degrees.

CAREER OUTCOMES

The global energy sector needs more qualified experts to manage how we source, store, transport and use energy.

You will develop skills in:

• Analysing energy systems from technical, commercial and policy standpoints
• Energy finance, economics and energy markets
• The operation of renewable and non-renewable energy systems
• Auditing different types of energy systems, including carbon emissions
• Combining technical and commercial knowledge to guide business decision making

You will find employment in industry and government in the following areas:

• Evaluating the technical and economic performance of energy systems
• Energy-related investment decisions
• Policy development and implementation
• Greenhouse gas and pollutant reporting, regulation and compliance

Option 1

An undergraduate degree:

• in a relevant discipline, such as Commerce, Science, Engineering
• with a weighted average mark of at least H2B (70%), or equivalent [1]
• including at least 12.5 points (1 subject) of mathematics, statistics or another quantitative subject at an appropriate level, or equivalent.

Option 2

An undergraduate degree:

• in a relevant discipline, such as Commerce, Science, Engineering
• with a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent [1]
• including at least 12.5 points (1 subject) of mathematics, statistics or another quantitative subject at an appropriate level
• 2 years of continuous, documented work experience in an applicable field, or equivalent.

The reference ‘or equivalent’ refers to a University of Melbourne equivalent score. To determine the equivalent score we look at your academic record and then calculate your University of Melbourne equivalent score based on the following factors:

• Research profile and international standing of the University you received your degree(s) from.
• The ranking of the University you received your degree from — the Times Higher Education Rankings and theShanghai Jiao Tong World Rankings are good reference points and provide an indication of where other universities are positioned (against the University of Melbourne).
• Australian Government guidelines which assess international universities and education institutions. These guidelines are not made public, however, they take into account a number of factors including scoring systems, etc.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A CV must be submitted with all applications for the Master of Energy Systems. Applications without a CV will result in delays in processing.

Credit for Prior Studies

Credit may be awarded for relevant prior study and/or for at least 2 years of documented relevant work experience, but no more than 50 points of credit may be awarded. To apply for credit you must complete the Master of Energy Systems Application for Advanced Standing Form and submit it with your course application.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

All domestic and international students studying at the University of Melbourne must satisfy the University of Melbourne English Language Entry Requirements.

You must satisfy the requirements below in one sitting and the test must be have been taken within the last 24 months (2 years) preceding application.

All applicants for our programs are automatically considered for scholarships based on academic merit. No separate applications for scholarships are necessary.

Scholarships may be awarded at the time of your course offer or after the application deadlines. If you do not receive a scholarship offer at the time of your course offer you may still receive an offer later.

Melbourne School of Engineering Scholarships

The Melbourne School of Engineering has recently created a generous new suite of scholarships for commencing students. Over 80 scholarships will be awarded, ranging from $5,000–$20,000 per annum.

JH Mirams Memorial Scholarships

Up to six scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded each year to students entering our Specialised Masters programs.

International Postgraduate Coursework Awards

Two International Postgraduate Coursework Awards (IPCA) consisting of a 50% fee remission are available each year to international applicants entering any Melbourne School of Engineering graduate coursework program.
