From motorways and bridges to medical devices and complex manufacturing assemblies – none of these would be possible without engineers. As an engineer you address the key issues we face today, like access to clean water, sustainable energy systems, waste management, recycling and environmental pressures. The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is for students who want to become professional engineers. It’s accredited by the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) as meeting the Washington Accord and prepares you for IPENZ membership.
You learn to formulate models and analyse, predict and monitor engineering systems – essential skills in professional engineering. Engineering projects and other practical papers will give you plenty of opportunities to apply what you have learnt in class. Our strong industry partnerships with companies like Fisher & Paykel, Beca, Opus, Spark and Contact Energy help you gain valuable work experience as part of your study.
- Start date: 18 July
Majors
- Architectural Engineering
- Construction Engineering
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- Maritime Majors (delivered in partnership with Australian Maritime College (AMC). Students study the first two years at AUT and the last two years at AMC).
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Software Engineering
Structure
Year 1
The first year is common to all majors. As well as completing engineering papers, you also develop communication and teamwork skills, which are essential for the team environment engineers work in.
Year 2
Your second year covers background and tools necessary to understand and apply mathematical and engineering sciences across a range of engineering disciplines within each major. This year mechatronics and software engineering students select a minor with the approval of the programme leader. Students study two papers from the selected minor.
Year 3
As well as undertaking advanced study in your major, you complete a project where you work on a piece of engineering design and analysis under the supervision of academic supervisors. This year, maritime major students move to study in Australia. Mechatronics and software engineering major students complete the course of study of their chosen minor with a further two papers.
Year 4
You complete an individual industrial project, working on a real-world piece of engineering design and analysis.
